Tips for Installing a Shower Pan

You are thinking of installing a shower pan... what about the idea of installing it yourself? Sounds interesting right! Well, here are some tips for installing a shower pan.
Tips for Installing a Shower Pan
A shower pan is made of fiberglass or tile and is provided with a non-slip surface to prevent leaking. There are certain advantages of using a fiberglass pan. The fiberglass shower pan can flex, resulting in less chance of cracking, whereas cracks are common in a tiled shower pan. Cleaning a bathroom with fiberglass pans is much easier than cleaning one with tile pans, as there are no seams or grout. However, in spite of the advantages of a fiberglass pan, many people opt for a ceramic tile flooring, as it is aesthetically superior. A better option is to take advantage of both; you can tile the bathroom walls and install a fiberglass shower pan in your bathroom floor.

Installing a shower pan is not difficult. You can install it on your own, instead of getting it done by a professional plumber. All you need to do is follow the step-by-step procedure in the shower pan installation guide. Take a quick look at the steps to install a shower pan.

The first and foremost step is buying the right type of shower pan. Among the many options of shower pans, buy the premolded type, as it is easy to install. Since the required slope for proper drainage of water is already built in the premolded type, there is no need to create a drainage gradient while installing.

The next step is to lay mortar directly on top of the sub floor. You can buy mortar mix that is available in the market. According to the instructions provided, prepare enough mortar for covering the floor. Check the recommended thickness of the mortar bed as given in the shower pan guide and lay the mortar. It is advisable to apply the mortar uniformly. As you are installing a premolded shower pan, there is no need to make a slope. In case you are installing any other type of shower pan, then maintain a gentle slope.

Some people prefer to use a shower pan membrane or liner underneath the mortar, which drains the water seepage (if any) to the shower drain. In such a condition, let the mortar dry completely and gently cover the bed with the shower pan membrane. Ensure that the liner reaches the sides and corners of the bathroom. One can make use of nails or staples to put the membrane in place. Now, put another layer of mortar bed evenly on top of the membrane. The last step is placing the shower pan over the mortar bed. While doing so, take care that the shower pan is fitted properly. If proper fitting is not done, there is a possibility of water leakage.

So, these are the easy steps for installing a shower pan. If you follow the steps carefully, you will derive satisfaction of a job done well. After installation is over, the bathroom should not be used for at least 12 hours.

It is important to install a shower pan of best quality, so that it may last for many years. In case your shower pan is leaking, replace it so as to prevent water damage to the adjoining walls. Water leakage can cause moisture accumulation leading to fungal growth that may have harmful effects on your health.
