Set in Lancaster Kentucky, in the year 1939....but not for long.
I need 5 comments to continue!!
The picture is of the house they live in.
-----------------------------------------
July 19, 1939 in Lancaster, Kentucky. An old Victorian house stands near a small forest, what feels like home to two teenagers growing up in a boarding house with their old fashioned mothers who home school them.
---------------------------------------------
Splashing through the ankle deep creek I smile and look back at her.
"Wait up!" She calls desperately, her white petticoats hiked up, yet still drenched in water and mud.
Pieces of hair falling down as she runs toward me. Surely she must be the most beautiful soul I'll ever meet.
I stand and wait for her, just watching.
She pants breathlessly but managed a few words as she leans over, her hands on her knees " Albert, I don't know what to do with you!" She tries to hold back a smile, but it turns crooked.
"I guess you'll just have to put up with me Cornelia!"
"You know how I despise that name! It's so old fashioned! " She stand up straight crossing her arms just under her chest.
"Well, I despise my name as well you know." I say raising an eyebrow
"Maybe you could rename me, and I, you! It is a thought."
I stare at the canopy of trees hanging high above the creek, letting a minute pass while I think...
"Well please forgive me Rose." I say with a low bow and a slight smirk.
"Rose, very pretty. I like it very much, but you always know how to throw a joke in everything! But I love you for it!" She says nearly blushing.
"But- I still haven't come up with a name for you. What about Jeremy, maybe Jare for short?"
"I love it, almost as much as I love you Rose." I pet he hair gently, running my hand down her cheeks,
"I've always loved you." I step back "Please don't think me froward."
"Not at all, you're the only one I've ever trusted, and the first one I ever loved."
Her smile is so beautiful, such a radiant glow about her.
"Don't you just feel sometimes...." She pauses, sitting down on the edge of the creek "Maybe, we were born in the wrong time period...we're so different from every one our age, I just feel out of place- It's silly I'd imagine, but I feel I can share it with you."
She looks up at me with a straight face, "No, it's very interesting thought, I have thought of the same in a round about way I suppose."
"I wish to be born in the future, time always changes things, perhaps then I might not have to wear so many of these dreadful petticoats!"
I try to hold back my laughter, but I can't.
Rose elbows me, "What are you laughing about, I can dream you know." she smiles
"That would certainly be a sight to see you in pants!"
"Oh come on! It wouldn't be that bad!"
"I didn't mean it to be bad-"
"I know exactly what you mean Jare, but you better catch up." she looks back winking at me
I run after her, both of us laughing out of pure joy.
SPLASH!
Now THIS ought to be funny
I walk over slowly. But then I realize.... she's not getting up!
I run through the water, my heart racing. "ROSE! ROSE! ANSWER ME!"
I stare where she was, only to find muddy water.
This can't happen! It just CAN'T! People don't just disappear like that.
Tears run down my cheeks, "Rose....you can't be gone! You just can't!"
