Chapter 1
Ah, yes the first day of senior year. Should I be happy? No way. There hasn't been a day in my life where I wasn't taunted and teased at school since I first came to my new school in Jonah, Rhode island, I thought as I laid there In my bed thinking.
I sighed, well, time for another wasteful day of school.
I'd so drop out any day any time, but mom.
Yes, mother, the all time, preppy single-working young one-of-a-kind mom. We moved out here right after her 2-year marriage with Dave-my step dad- ended, eh, not so well.
"If only we got him out fast enough..." I muttered to myself putting on my flats right after my green sweater and black tights. I couldn't decide what to do with my Brown hair. Tie it? Curl it? Ugh, I haven't the time! I just fluffed it out, applied some lip gloss, stood in front of the mirror jumping up and down, making noise with my lips. I grabbed my book bag and ran downstairs to find my mom making breakfast.
"Hey, honey!" My mom greeted me.
"Hi mom, bye mom!" I shouted as I ran for the door.
"Evie!" My mom shouted after me, but I kept running.
It was 1996 and I was currently attending Jonah high, the small high school located not far from the coast near Jonah beach, the hangout for teens on the weekends. I don't go there often, since I'm still known as the girl -who -wants- to fit- in -but- is -still -considered- a- nobody.
"Oh!" I let out a hard huff as my books went flying out of my hands and splattered onto the floor. I rushed up to my knees and started to pack them lazily into my arms.
"That's you all over, Evie" My very best friend helped me up.
"Steph!" I hugged her.
Well, I guess I could say I have one very best friend in the whole world though.
To make a long story short, Stephanie was one of the four 'it' girls, you know, one of those popular girls all guys like, they get away with anything, blah, blah, blah. She was one, her best friend? Queen bee Malice Meyers. Boy do I envy her; they had an all out fist fight on my 1st day here 2 years ago, in the hallways. Malice stole Stephanie's boyfriend, they settled it out. It was crazy! Hair was all over the place with broken heels and all. I had a non-fatal nosebleed that day and we had met in the nurse's office. I was pretty nervous. Malice made it clear that she disliked me.
"Where you got those from? Garbage can?" She pointed at my shoes, I hid my feet under the chair, and she gave a laugh and walked out the nurse's office.
Awkward silence.
"Why you let her talk to you like that?" Stephanie then asked me. I only looked up. "You shouldn't," She continued "It's wrong, she's wrong. Next time she bugs you, tell her what a skank she is," She says and I laugh.
"I'm serious, for some reason it always ticks her off...Stephanie," She holds out her hand.
"Evelyn smith," I shook it.
"Don't worry new kid... I got your back," She pats my back.
"That was some left hook you gave her back there..." I say ...
"The second bell ringed already, see you 4th period," Stephanie waved goodbye to me.
I headed to my first period class, which was history with Mr. Smitch. I sit alone now, Kate used to sit next to me, but one of the boys started this stupid rumor, I don't want to get into it. I got out my notebook and pencil when someone just sat next to me.
I turned it was a boy, I peered over at his face and he noticed I was staring at him and turned around.
We stared at each other, he was definitely new, and I mean I knew everything about everybody. He had dark, serious eyes that showed character in them, he was definitely muscle -material, not much though, dark hair-
"Sorry," I cut myself off.
"It's cool," He had kept on staring and so did I, till he offered his hand.
"Nathan," He said to me.
"Uh, Evie-Evie," I rush to remember my name, shoot.
"So, uh, you're definitely new here..." I say.
"What makes it obvious?" He asked me, I could see he really wanted to know and probably hates being new, just like I did.
"You're sitting next to me," I say as he leans into me.
"No, you seem cool, your cu-" He starts with a smile just as some dudes from the back row call him over to them.
"Oh, you shouldn't go over there... their bad news..." I advise him.
"What? Their okay," He tells me, he turns and goes on anyway.
For the rest of the period he never comes back, he left his stuff in the seat next to me, I can't help turning around wondering was he ever going to come back? Just as the bell rings he does.
"Hey, you shouldn't talk to those people there horrible, the teachers just don't care what they do anymore," I tell him.
"Well, I think their pretty neat,' He tells me packing his stuff.
"Your first day here and you didn't get any work done," I say to him.
Funny, the more and more I say to him, he seems to have the potential of a bad boy, just like those boys in the back.
He pauses, seeming perplexed "Why do you care?" He then asked me.
"I- I" I stopped myself "I was just trying to help you out, but whatever," I shrug, sticking my nose up in the air like a snob.
"Whatever," he shoots back and I glare at him.
"If I don't want your help... Why do you persist on helping me out?" He then asked me.
"Fine, fine" I close the subject and walk away, snobbishly.
Almost automatically, as if I just had to know, I turned around to find him grinning at me, he then waved!
I growled angrily for some reason and turned on my heel and walked away.
Why was I so angry?
Had we fought over something meaningless?
Had we even fought?
God, He was so annoying!
