Tiger's Habitat: What do Tigers eat?
Tigers always prefer to live near a water source when in the wild. Besides, the areas they inhabit always have a good forest cover. A source of water such as a lake would also attract other animals in search of water and this is when tigers are able to pounce on their preys easily. Tigers always prowl around in areas that have dense vegetation. The green cover is used as a means of camouflage and also gives a feeling of protection for tigers. Medium-sized animals always end up being easy targets for tigers. Tigers, especially in India, feed on Sambar, domestic buffalo, boars etc. Depending upon the habitat and the particular area in the world, tigers also feed on deer, antelopes, monkeys, camel, wild horses etc. When on the hunt for its prey, tigers attack it with great speed and bite the throat to render it helpless. The prey ultimately dies of strangulation. It is also reported that tigers can carry their kill for miles altogether! Humans also tend to be their prey only when a tiger is provoked or feels insecure in the presence of humans.
Did you know tigers are also amongst the only of a kind in the cat family who love to bathe in water? A tiger is also found close to sources of water bodies since it loves to spend time bathing in ponds or lakes. Tigers are not really afraid of water; in fact these royal animals are fantastic swimmers contrary to what is known about the cat family!
It is reported that India currently has the largest population of tigers in the wild. Unfortunately, their numbers are on a rapid decline not only in India, but also in certain parts across the world. Therefore, a preservation of their natural habitat is very important for their survival. If humans realize their importance and change things for the better, only then there can be hope for the survival of the tiger.
