Thrill Ride

Deep in the jungle, I am chased by ferocious dinosaurs.
The humidity is stifling. A small drop of sweat slides down my neck, falling to the damp ground at my feet. The smell of freshly turned soil fills my nostrils. I move slowly through the towering plant life. All around me is a slight fog curling around my feet and ankles. The distant sound of strange birds echoes in my ears like wailing sirens. This place is strange and unfamiliar. Everything is larger than normal and I have never felt so insignificant. My light-up Velcro shoes flash green and pink in the shadowy light like a beacon lighting my way.

I pass underneath the dew speckled ferns, high above me. A large drop lands on my head and dribbles down my arm, mingling with the light sheen of sweat permanently pasted on my skin. The sweet smell of exotic fruits and plants lingers in the air, soaking into my frizzed hair. My nervous fingers play with a frayed edge of my white hand-me down tank top. The noises have gradually started coming closer. I duck my head quickly as an unnaturally large bird with a pointed head swoops down at me with razor teeth.

I don’t even have to think about running before I started moving at a far quicker pace. I flew through the fauna as a roar sounds behind me. A slow chill crawls down my spine and pools in my stomach, twisting my guts in fear. Am I fast enough? Will I get there in time? The answer is apparent when a low growl comes from my left. My body freezes up in fear as I feel the snort of a large animal blow the hair from my face. Its breath is putrid and stinks of rotting eggs. It is so close I can almost feel its sinister black eyes roaming my body; sizing up how to eat me. My body jerks forward by its own will and I let out a piercing wail. My screams are drowned out by a bone-shaking roar that rattles my brain and curls my toes. With one last shriek, the world goes pitch black and I feel my body pitch forward into open air, falling. Whether it’s into a stomach or off a cliff, I can’t tell, but a slight pressure around my shoulders keeps me in place.

The sudden rush of cold water surrounding my body in a spray jolts me from my stupor. The fog has cleared and the sunlight is beaming down. I bob in the water like a cork taking in the new surroundings. The air is cleaner and smells more of flowers and spring. The excess water droplets are cool and refreshing on my salty skin and my heartbeat slows down to a normal pace once more. The water has already soaked through my shoes and feels squishy when I wiggle my toes. Eventually the current pulls me along the river. Through the plants, I can see more creatures of great size looking quizzically at me, but I just float on by.

My head is filled with thoughts of near death experiences and sharp teeth. I am so much in shock that I don’t feel myself stop. A large familiar palm is outstretched towards me like a life-line. I latch on to it and let it pull me away from the exotic land of monsters and to a large stone archway. As I am led to the exit of my personal hell I see a large sign to my right written in big bold letters.
