Three Tips for More Time

Three tips for time management include: [1] Manage yourself, not your time; [2] Use watches, clocks, and timers as tools; and [3] Pay attention to what you are doing.
Do you need to have more time? Well, you have 24 hours a day, 60 minutes an hour, just like everyone else! But you can probably make much better use of your time. Here are three tips to help you get the essentials done, make sure you have some fun, and reduce your stress levels.

1. Manage Yourself, Not Your Time

By managing yourself, I mean that you have many choices to make about how you spend your time. It may not feel like it if you have a job and children. But still you do have a lot of flexibility in exactly how you do things.

If a friend phones and starts groaning about problems, you can decide how much of that you want to invest in. If another friend invites you to go for a walk by the river when you're tired, you may find the energy to go out.

We move through time as the framework of our days, but what we need to manage is our energy and our choice of actions. Pay attention to this and you will see ways to do things that suit you better.

2. Use Watches, Clocks, and Timers as Tools

You may or may not like to wear a watch, but if you have a way of knowing the time easily, you are more likely to stay on track for the things you need to do. If you don't want to wear a watch on your wrist, you might like one that hangs from a purse handle, perhaps you would prefer a pedometer with the time on it to keep in a pocket. That will also help you get more exercise.

If you're at your computer, of course, you can just glance down at the bottom right to see the time.

Another handy device is the timer. This can help you remember to take out the dish that you put in the oven, but it has many other uses, such as reminding you to go pick up your child or jolting you out of a reverie in time to make a phone call.

3. Pay Attention to What You are Doing

If you are dashing around like a maniac, you may not remember later where you put your car keys when you came home. Or at work, if you are distracted, you might not notice that you left an important step out of something you do every day. Slow down enough to keep a steady, attentive pace and you'll end up with more time!

There are many other tips for time management. There's the power of lists, for example. But if you take just one idea from this short article and apply it, you'll be the better off for it!
