They Live on in Our Heads
Though a relationship may physically end. The memories, the passion, the pain lives on.
"Those who are dead, are not dead. They're just living in my head." My roommate had this line playing on a loop over and over again. It's from the song, "42" by Coldplay. 42 is an interesting number. It supposedly signifies the meaning of life. I don't think it's a coincidence that Coldplay chose that line as a main theme to their song which they aptly named, "42."
In our lives people come and people go. We've grown accustomed to saying our goodbyes. So accustomed in fact, that sometimes we don't ever bother to learn the names of new people we meet thinking "What's the point? I'm probably never going to see them again anyway." As these people subtly enter our lives and just as subtly leave, they leave a slight mark in us. We may forget what they look like. We may forget where, when and how we met them but I like to believe that there would be something we never forget about everyone that enters our lives. They become a part of us in our subconscious and they do live in our heads.
Not everyone comes in and leaves so subtly though. There are people who enter our lives like a grand opening. Lights are flashing, music is blaring, and confetti is falling all around as we meet. They don't just stay for a short chat. They set up a permanent residence. Our two separate lives converge and continue as one. We trek the tallest mountains, swim the deepest oceans and do everything in between. But as life would have it, she leaves.
It's not a subtle departure. I will remember her name, her touch, everything about her. Her influence on me isn't hard to see. Grand closing. The destruction left in the wake of her departure is eminent. I try to forget her, because then her that was with me is dead. She's a new person now. But then her, I knew continues to live in my head.
Passion, pain, the human experience will never end because life never ends. Nothing ever does. It merely takes on different forms, passed from one person to another.
