The Zain Effect (Chapter 10)
We drove in Zain's jeep to pick up Nik. We parked up outside the gates and waited, impatiently. Eventually I spotted her and hammered on the window, feeling an escaped prisoner. She rushed over and got in the back seat.
Zain steered out into the road and I turned to my confused little sister. "I've left a note for Dad, were going to be staying with Zain for a while till things get better at home." I told her. She didn't look phased, in fact she looked happy.
Once we arrived at Zain's house her smile nearly split her face. I grabbed her, restraining her from charging straight inside. "Remember to be on your best behavior, we're guests." I whispered. She nodded and walked slowly inside, after Zain.
Meg and Alice were both in the kitchen, cooking together as we arrived home. "You must be Nik, I'm Meg." Zain's mom smiled. Zain took my hand and pulled me backwards. "Don't worry okay, I know how your mind works. You're probably stressed out and feel guilty as ever." He whispered. I sighed and clutched him in a hug.
"Thank you." I sighed. "This is great." Nikita told me as she passed into the living room. I laughed at my little sister and Zain kissed me softly. "Want to watch a movie?" He asked. "Nik's watching television." I pointed out. "There's a TV in my bedroom." Zain said with a slow grin.
He didn't wait for an answer but tugged me upstairs. His room was huge and painted a light blue. There was a double bed and a flat screen TV against the wall. A packed bookcase with timeless classics, a guitar, a piano and CD player on the wall.
"Welcome to my abode." He grinned, jumping backwards onto the bed. "Is this your way of luring me onto your bed?" I asked, cocking an eyebrow. He grinned. "You know me too well, beautiful." He replied.
He patted the space beside him. With a sigh I flopped down beside him and he pulled me to him, so I was sprawled across his chest. Then he flicked on the television and chose us a movie. It was The Hangover.
We laughed our way through it till Meg knocked and entered with a tray of two meals. "I brought your dinner up." She smiled, placing it in front of us. "Thanks Mom." Zain grinned. I was blushing a deep red and scrambled up from his chest.
"Aww, that's mean baby." Zain said, following suit and grabbing his own dinner. We sat against the headboard and carried on watching the movie. Once we'd finished we went downstairs and Zain washed up our plates.
Nikita and Alice were hitting it off, they were playing a game together and laughing happily. Meg was knitting of all things.
"I hope you two are being careful up there." Meg called, as we headed back upstairs. I felt my face go up in a heated blaze. "I'm always careful with Lyra Mom, don't worry." Zain replied, grinning annoyingly. I perched on the edge of his bed as I entered his room again. "Play me some piano?" I asked. He looked at me, surprised at my request.
"Aren't you very good." I teased. "I've passed all my grades, so ha ha Lyra." He smiled as he sat down on the stool facing the piano.
He started to play and it was so soft and melodic. I closed my eyes and fell backwards onto the bed, letting the music wrap around me. He finished and I let out a huge breathe I'd been holding.
"What do you call it?" I asked in a whisper. "Lyra's Love Song." He told me. I held in a gasp and sat up to see him looking serious for once. I became flustered and ran a hand through my hair. He got up from the stool and pulled me up, holding me to him.
He smiled softly and twirled me around, like we were dancing. "I'm sorry if I wear my heart on my sleeve, but I do love you." He told me. I bit my lip, not knowing how to respond. I saw his face crush slightly but he composed it again.
"I'm sorry Zain I really don't know if I can say I love you yet." I whispered. "I'm grateful for everything you've done and I really like you, but my Father told my Mother he loved her and she died years later, love hurts a lot, maybe you should reconsider loving me." I said, tears filling my eyes.
Then I fled and ran to my room, locking the door behind me.
