When I woke up it was five in the morning. I inspected the house and saw my parents asleep on their bed still in their clothes they must have had a long day. My dad is CEO of his own company and my mom was a divorce attorney. I walked into my parents room gave them both a kiss and tucked them into bed. Ugh my head was throbbing I took a couple of aspirin and got in the shower. When I got out I felt a lot better and knowing it was Friday helped too. My feelings were conflicted about tomorrow though. I though maybe I should cancel the date but then I though I was just feeling sad over my break-up with Tony. Oh well I had all of today and 7 hours of Saturday detention to figure it out. When I finished getting ready I had plenty of time before school so I decided to get something to eat. I went to the Starbucks across the street from my school ordered a Grande vanilla bean frappacino and bagel with cream cheese. I sat down with my things and started to enjoy them when I noticed a guy around my age staring at me. He looked very familiar he got up and proceeded to walk towards me.
"Hey, you don’t remember me do you" he asked
"Um no can’t say that I do" I replied
"I’m Derek, Derek Garason"
"Oh umm"
"Your parents went to dinner with us the other night they said you couldn’t make it because you had big plans"
"
I smiled at his comment because the night my parents went out with the Garason’s was the night Tony broke up with me.
"Oh so you’re a son of one of my parents colleagues"
"Yeah but…. You really don’t remember me"
"What?" I asked kind of confused
"Elementary we were inseparable and now you don’t even remember me ha-ha"
I stared intensely at the guy and though back to elementary school the only person I could remember was my best friend uh OH MY GOSH I screamed in my head then out loud causing everyone to stare at us. I jumped out of my seat and embraced my old friend with a hug
"Now you remember" he said
"Oh my gosh little D I’m so embarrassed how could I ever forget you"
"That’s what I’m saying we were like Bonnie and Clyde, Thelma and Louise we did everything together" he joked
"Look how much you grew" I squealed
When we were kids Derek was scrawny weak pale and had huge glasses. Now he was about 6’2 very muscular you could see his muscles through his black collard sweater still a little pale but has some color to him and no glasses.
"Me, look at you what happened to the tall for her age skinny knobby kneed girl I last saw in 6th grade"
In the 6th grade my parents decided to move to the cozy neighborhood everyone knows as Worthington gated community and Derek’s parents decided to move into a penthouse downtown so we live on complete opposite sides of the city and went to different middle schools. Soon I met Hitler I mean Katie and then became popular and grew into my looks. Next thing I knew we lost contact and Derek and I became a distant memory.
"Awe Derek what are you doing on this side of town"
"My schools on break"
"For what"
"I don’t quite know I go to a year round prep school and we get tons of breaks that probably equal a total of 3 months we just don’t get those three months at once"
I almost cried as I stood there chatting with the person who use to be my whole life. He saw my eyes swelling with tears and drew me into a hug. We stayed that way until I heard my school bell ring. I grabbed my things and went to rush out the door. Before I could Derek grabbed me by the hand and pulled me back to him.
"Give me your number" he said
"480-274-9573" I replied
He put it in his phone sand I ran to school I made it to class just in time.
