The Wrong Side of the Track Ch. 18

After her awful conversation with her mom...
My mom was not the last visitor I would have that night. Derek’s mom stopped by to tell me how she use to have a black boyfriend once and he was the 2nd longest relationship her husband being the longest. She told me about how she let her friends and family drive a wedge between them and the split after 2 years. Then she gave me the advice to not let that happen to me and be strong my mom will come around. Her conversation really cheered me up why couldn’t she be my mom. Then she made me promise not to tell anyone about demetri (her black boyfriend). Lastly the one person I didn’t expect to see my dad, he usually stays out of subjects that involve guys or me and mom arguing. I’m still closer to my dad then my mom it was like he always put in that extra effort to spend time. He entered my room with a tray that had 2 cups of hot cocoa and some smore’s he made in the microwave.

"Hey sweetheart" he said as he handed me a cup of cocoa and sat next to me on the bed.

"Hey dad, thanks"

"So your mom tells me that guy is your boyfriend"

"Yeah, please don’t tell me your gonna talk about how he’s not our kind of people"

"No, I just have one question"

"Huh" I mumbled as a took a sip of my cocoa

"Does he make you happy?"

"yes, very happy" I said with a huge grin thinking about how much fun i’ve had with him in these last few weeks.

"That’s all that matters to me, you know I had an African- American girlfriend once"

"Oh my gosh what’s with everybody and their black girlfriends and boyfriends"

"What" my dad said with a confused look
"Nothing continue"

"Well we ended it because her family didn’t approve and I vowed I’d never do that to my kids, so sweetheart if he makes you happy that’s all that matters I don’t care about the color of his skin"

"Dad have you ever hit mom"

"No sweetheart what would ever make you think that" my dad looked hurt that I would even think such a thing. But it was the only explanation I had to why my mom would even suggest me to go back to tony.

"Just something I was thinking about sorry dad I didn’t mean anything by it"

"Its okay sweetie but I would never hit your mother you know that right"

"Yeah, dad what do you do when you’ve lost respect for someone"

"There’s nothing you can do only they can earn your respect back why"

"Oh nothing just thinking about a friend thanks dad"

"Okay sweetheart if you wanna talk about it you know I’m here for you"

"I know dad"

"Well it’s getting late so I’m gonna turn in oh and if your mother ask I gave you a long talk about how you have to keep the right company and blah, blah, blah"

"Ok dad" he gave me a peck on the forehead and left

After the cocoa and smore’s I was exhausted and went to bed. When I woke up I was kind of sad even though it was my birthday and I had my party today. I got up and went and got in the shower. I wasn’t going to school today so that I could prepare for my party tonight. After I got dressed I headed downstairs to grab some breakfast. My mom was sitting at her laptop drinking cup of coffee while dad, Derek and his parents stood around the breakfast nook eating eggs, bacon, and toast. I walked over to them and grabbed the plate Derek handed me.

"Morning sweetie, happy birthday" my dad exclaimed

"Happy birthday" Derek yelled as he gave me a bear hug

"Happy birthday" Derek’s parents said in unison

My mom didn’t say anything I guess she was still upset with me. After breakfast Katie came over and me, her, and Derek headed to the salon.

"So Audrey is Marcus still your date" Katie asked

"Yes, why" I snapped at her

"No reason I was just wondering"

"Marcus is a touchy subject today" Derek added

"Why" Katie asked

"No reason" I replied defensively

When my hair was finished it looked fabulous it was bouncy in big spiral curls and it came together with the tiara on my head. Derek and Katie gave me my compliments and I gave them compliments. We headed back home so Katie could do my makeup I promised her she could. When we got home my parents were on their phones confirming things. When I walked in dad gave me a little kiss and complimented my hair. My mom just stared at me out the corner of her eyes. I and Katie went to my room to finish getting ready and Derek did the same. I sat at my mirror while Katie applied my makeup and talked about how great she and Dawson are doing. But I couldn’t stop thinking about how Marcus has driven a wedge between me and my friends and now between me and my mom. Yet sadly I didn’t care anymore I love him and I know he loves me too.

"Audrey, Audrey" Katie yelled

"You haven’t heard a word I said have you"

"No sorry"

"I said what you think"

She turned me to face the mirror and I couldn’t believe it I looked gorgeous. I mean I guess I wasn’t ugly before but right now I looked absolutely gorgeous.

"I guess you like it"

"Katie I love it I look"

"Gorgeous" Derek said as her entered my room

"Yeah thank you"

"Your welcome"

"Thank you Katie"

I told Derek to leave the room and I slipped on my dress and my jewelry. I took one last look at myself in the mirror before I proceed out my room. As I started down the stairs I saw everyone’s eyes look my direction. This was the first time my mom has looked directly at me since last night. As I continued down the stairs I noticed Marcus amongst the others at the bottom of the stairs. When I reached the bottom my dad snapped some pictures and came over and told me how gorgeous I looked. Everyone one by one did the same thing even my mom. I walked to Marcus who looked so hot in the suit I had got him for the party.

"Hey" I said

"You look gorgeous"

"Thanks you look nice to"

"Thank you"

"Hey I don’t look to bad either" Derek said jokingly

"Ha-ha yes you do"

"And me too" Katie added

"Yes you do" I replied to Katie

All four of us sat around on the couches discussing how everything was gonna play out we talked about the ride over there my entrance and most importantly to have fun. I had never been happier that those couple of hours right there me, my boyfriend and my best friends just sitting around having a good time life couldn’t get any better.
