The Wrong Girl: Chapter 33 - The Latter Walk
From fairy tale to horror...
Elena silently walked back to her apartment. Kyle had dropped her just around the block; given her the much-needed time to walk. The magic had ended because the night had ended. Oh, why had the night ended?
Kyle had packed a light snack for both of them for dinner. They sat on the hood of his car, just after they were done with the long walks along the beach, and did nothing but talk. They talked of everything. They talked of nothing. Their childhood, their crushes, their parents, they talked about them all but with such lightness that nothing serious or major had been discovered. Elena didn't dare mention her relationship with Evan. She was aware she was consciously omitting those things from him, but first date wasn't the right time to mention it. What if this was just a one night they'd share? Even though deep inside her, she knew there was more to come.
Elena was about to open the door but something caught her eyes. The view from the window was something she hadn't expected. She could see Nina and Aaron lying there in the sofa. Nina hadn't left yet. For a second Elena thought she was there waiting for her. But a second look made her decide against it. Nina wasn't asleep like Aaron. Aaron was fast asleep in Nina's lap. The TV was on, a faint murmur of people arguing about the best football team was heard, but Elena couldn't see it through the small window. Nina's eyes weren't on the screen. She was looking at the guy sleeping like a child in her laps. Her hands kept moving back to forth, playing with Aaron's bronze hair. Elena couldn't help but notice Nina's adoration for him. Elena couldn't believe she hadn't realized the budding love between her closest friends before this day.
Elena decided they could use some more moments like that. Besides she could use another walk. Elena walked and walked, no particular thoughts on her mind.
"Elena, is that you?" Phoebe's voice stopped her from behind.
"Phoebe?"
And even before Elena could comprehend what was happening, Phoebe crash landed on top of her shouting "Ely" innumerable number of times. Phoebe was happy would be an understatement.
"What's happened Phoebe?" Elena asked unsure if she actually wanted to know.
"Today was the best day of my entire life!" Phoebe shrieked.
Elena couldn't say anything. To her eyes Phoebe had never looked more beautiful. She was wearing a creamy colored blouse and dark leggings; her red hair was tightly tied to a French braid. But it wasn't the way her hair was tied or the color of her clothes that she wore that gave her almost an angelic touch to her face. Under the golden lights shining from the street lamps Phoebe looked radiant. Her gray eyes caught the streaking rays of lights and for a second Elena was confused if it really was the middle of the night. Those glee eyes looked like a sliver of sunshine had dropped into them.
Phoebe was a happy person but it didn't take a second look to guess that she had seen the bitter world. But that night, Phoebe looked as innocent as a toddler. Phoebe's eyes narrowed and stretched as she smiled and stared.
"Aren't you going to ask why?" Phoebe asked teasingly.
"Why?"
"I went out on a first date of my life!"
"Really?"
"Yeah... I know it's so hard to believe. But all during my high school I was so busy with studies, jobs, acnes and I was practically a geek and all. Oh if I knew dates would be so heavenly, I'd have forced a poor lad to go on a date with me. Oh well I'm glad I saved the best till this... I'm savoring this moment. My perfect date!" Phoebe babbled almost in a breath.
"With whom?" Elena yelled just so she could keep up with Phoebe's intensity.
Phoebe made a face as if the answer was as obvious as the oxygen they breathed in.
"Evan!"
That one word made sure the obvious oxygen lost its way along the air pipe. Elena was sure she was hyperventilating. But if so, it was either Elena commendably hid it very well or that Phoebe was much too glad to notice it. The conversation flowed like they had started few seconds ago - Phoebe's ending with exclamation points and Elena's one word reply.
"Oh..."
"Yeah... that night at Kyle's place, I gathered all my courage to ask him out preparing a blown out rejection but he actually asked me out! I mean we did it at the same time! I know it was so weird..."
"Kyle's place? When?"
"Does it matter? Oh... the way he laughs. You know the sound of waterfall, that's Evan's laughter. I can't believe I've never heard him laugh before.
He's so smart, so courteous, so funny! Where the hell was he all my life?" Phoebe asked to no one at all.
"Army" Elena replied automatically.
"I know he told me about it... it's so surreal. He's so kind and so gentle, it's just impossible to imagine a violent side to him."
"I know," Elena replied shakily thinking it had taken almost half a year's time to see all that side of Evan. How did Phoebe catch everything in one date?
Elena pulled Phoebe around and started rather feverishly to get to her apartment. She was sure, if she actually concentrated to their conversation now, she would faint. Her breaths came out short and ragged but she managed to reply appropriately to let Phoebe continue her story well. As soon as she reached her apartment, the pressure of being the sole listener was off her shoulder.
Elena was stunned as she stood there and looked at Nina and Aaron's reaction to Phoebe's happy blabbering. Nina was about to move toward Elena when she swiftly excused herself to her room and closed the door. Behind the door she knew Nina was worried about her, but she couldn't bring herself to care.
Elena dragged her slumping body by the door for support and felt her heartbeat at a speed of light. She couldn't cry, she didn't find a reason for. She had moved on. Apparently Evan did as well. She was in a state of shock, how did her fairy tale night managed to turn into a horror? She shouldn't have taken the latter walk. Maybe she'd have brought up some much-needed time to settle the disastrous news that Phoebe's happiness had brought along.
No, she really shouldn't have taken the stroll.
