The Wrong Girl - Chapter 20 - The Return

Elena finally sees Evan...
Elena felt like she had stayed by the door feeling like an idiot for a whole eternity, but she hadn't, though she had actually sat down for a whole hour doing nothing but thinking only about that kiss. When she finally caught herself, the clock was ticking loudly. It reminded her that she was supposed to attend one of her last classes of her freshmen year.

Suddenly, getting up like caught in a frenzy, she got to her closet picked up the clothes that reached her trembling hands, and even fixed her hair with the same. She checked herself in the mirror without actually looking at herself. She looked good with her simple shirt, scarf, coat and fitting jeans but she didn't see it, and she didn't have time for it.

Elena stomped out of her room like a hurricane, Nina was waiting there. She actually said something but Elena let it pass by her. This was her last class; she couldn't miss it for the world. She walked in a hurry, her mind empty. All she could think of was getting to her class. She herself wasn't sure why missing this one class or lecture was important; it was just an early wrap up for the year, all the other lecture would continue all the same. Maybe she just wanted to avoid the embarrassing encounter with Aaron or Nina, maybe she was afraid of all the explaining that she felt she owned to both of them, but right then the need to reach the college was filling every muscle of her body to make her move faster.

When she finally reached her destination, her lungs were burning, her throat was dry and her feet felt like it was turning into hard wood, every step ahead took a great amount of effort. But still she pushed herself more; she just had to get to the damn class already!

Just when she was about to get the stairs leading to a long hallway, among the crowd a face stood out. She should've just kept running, shouldn't have felt the way she felt, that little bump in the heartbeat like the weaker version of the same connection that she used feel what seemed like another lifetime ago, that made her look away. Suddenly her pace slowed, her vision blurred. She wasn't sure she was simply seeing the man she was looking at or was it she hallucinating but it couldn't have been her imagination.

After such a long time; time had broken down her memory power into pieces. If she were imagining this, the person in front of her eyes, wouldn't be so perfect, he would've be distraught by the time wore memory. He... the guy all her muscles were connected to, Evan... was here.

Evan was here.

The cold wind kept blowing, hitting Elena almost like pushing her to move on, but she wasn't moving anymore. She stood there, trying to confirm her vision. Was it really Evan, she was seeing? He was at a distant, but Elena somehow felt sure that it was really him, sitting at the other building's stairs, alone. He hadn't seen her yet, but Elena was surer than her life itself that he would look her way in any other passing second. He would pick her out of the crowd, he always could.

Without knowing, Elena's eyes welled up, her warm hands and feet grew ice-cold. She could feel the weight of her entire body on the heels of her leg, pressuring the stilettos. She so stupidly wore instead of some running shoes, she actually should've worn. She stood there watching the guy in the gray shirt suck into the little nicotine stick and blow the gray air away without a care in the world.

Elena didn't know which hurt more, all the months of unconsciously waiting for him, secretly knowing that he'd be here some day, or him starting smoking again. Her mind strolled in a speed of light to remember what he had actually said when he promised to never smoke again. She wanted to remember it before she could confront him, using his words against him, to make him stop smoking again.

During all this time, it seemed like Evan hadn't looked her way once. He hadn't noticed her yet, standing her ground while the world around her hurriedly got to the place they had to be in and start away with their busy life. The people in her college ground were growing in number, people started to get in her way of the perfect view. Sometimes she got pushed by people, sometimes people stared at her, but she wasn't actually aware of it, it seemed like she had entered into a powerful trance that no amount of shaking could break. She was in her own world where only she and Evan existed, and no one else.

But suddenly a handful of people in a rush tumbled upon her and made her fall to the ground. A bunches of 'sorry' were mumbled before Elena got back to her feet, but horrendously Evan wasn't sitting in the same place. Elena felt like she had just woken up from the sweetest of dreams without knowing how it would end. What, like five seconds had passed and Evan vanished in thin air.

At that Elena panicked and felt lost in the familiar place that she came to almost everyday. One glance of Evan and she had found the place she felt belonged in but where was he?

Elena rushed back to her apartment. She was almost sure that Nina would be there. She had to share the news with someone, she had to let someone know what she felt or how she felt, even though she couldn't quite explain it herself. She just had to let it all out.

And just like she had predicted there she was, Nina sitting in the couch almost like she was waiting for Elena. Nina, her hand crossed, she almost look like she was meditating, like every breath she took was a controlled movement, a poor gesture to keep herself calm.

Elena threw her books and bags away, and jumped to the couch and met her eyes with Nina's. Almost at the same breath, as if on cue, both said the same thing in a very different tone of voice. Nina's filled with worry whereas Elena's filled with hope.

"Evan's here."
