The Wrong Girl - Chapter 17: No Apologies...

When Nina saw Evan on the porch with a shield of smoke protecting him, she wasn't sure what she was to do. Nina wasn't sure if she was sober yet or was she getting drunker by the minute, she wasn't sure if Evan was really there at her front door. How could she? He had disappeared for more than a year and suddenly when everything was about to get normal again, he decides to pop back?

"Are you drunk?" Evan asked.

"It's really you Evan?" Nina mouthed her thoughts.

"Yes, bossy..."

Nina wasn't sure how to react; it was like she had a two parts in herself debating. She wanted to slap the cool and calm guy smoking his cigarettes with such serenity same while wanting to go rush over to him and hug the brother she thought she had lost.

She almost gave in; she did rush to him but couldn't make herself hug him. Why you ask? Because she felt the change, she somehow had her douche bag alert instinct on. But there wasn't much she could do anyway...

"Come her Nini, you have no idea just how much I missed you this year" Evan said and pulled her into a big tight hug like he didn't need a permission.

Nina had her guards up but all the walls started tumbling down, she caught Evan like he was her pillar when the world fell apart. If she wasn't sober yet, she was then. She cried silently, letting her tears cool Evan's gray shirt a little.

If Nina could cry without getting embarrassed at all it was in front of Evan, because she had done it before cried on his shoulder, allowed herself to feel and be weak, allowed someone to care for her. Nina finally moved a little bit away from him and eyed him carefully.

He had spiked up his hair a bit made him look different. He looked good, thinner but still good. The smoking must have been the reason for it. Evan had stopped smoking for Elena, for a second she wondered what made him start again. Maybe Sarah? She immediately cast the thought away and voiced her confusion, wiping her tears away.

"Where did you go Evan? Why did you disappear? Did you really leave Elena? What happened? do you..."

Evan stopped her putting his index finger in the air silently shouting "stop asking questions" without really speaking.

"I can answer all the question of yours, justify myself, explain it but it won't change anything. Because as bad as last year was, we all survived it, everybody moved on Ely, let's just stop at that..."

"What the hell? You disappeared on Ely, left her at the altar leaving us all to think that you were dead or went run away bride on us and now you want me, you want US to not ask you any questions? Too bad Evan, as much as I love you, you're being a fucking dick right now!"

Evan didn't react, it was as if he was waiting for the verbal thrash. The lines on his forehead creased to one only when Nina asked her next question after taking a few breathers for her to calm down.

"Do you even know what Ely went through?"

Evan's head dropped, he couldn't look Nina eye to eye. Only then Nina believed that the old caring, sweet and charming Evan was still there in that arrogant man who was standing in front of her. She wanted to bring that guy back.

"Do you even know how heart-broken she was? It was next to impossible to bring her here, it was..."

"It was Nina. Now it isn't. Now everything is better."

Nina lost him. The old Evan was there so evident in his face for a second but now she just lost him.

"Yeah it is... so why are you here now Evan? I mean clearly you aren't here to apologize or to explain things, the right thing basically. So what ARE you doing here in Xavier High?" Nina put no amount of effort to hide her irritation. In fact she exaggerated it to her face as if it were a mask that she could put or wear off anytime she wanted.

"Why would a guy come to a college? I'm here to graduate..."

"What?"

"You heard me... and I told you I really did miss you"

Nina was about to yell something really nasty when Evan pushed her inside her apartment and said "go take a shower and change into something that doesn't reek so that we can have some coffee...
I'm waiting right here... come back soon Nini!"

Evan closed the door behind her before she could even react. She just stood there a while and thought you think a guy disappears on his wife and sister and when he comes back, he'd apologize but no that's apparently too much to ask!!

"Nini I can see you standing there like an idiot! I'm still waiting here!"

Nina automatically did what the voice from the other side asked her to do. Hoping he'd spill the beans over a cup of coffee... but first she had to take a shower and change.
