The Wrong Girl - Chapter 1 Cruel Dreams

Picture of Evan.
"Ely… Ely honey…"

Elena’s breath took up a notch when she recognized the voice calling out to be Evan’s voice, her Evan’s. She was about to clung herself to Evan’s body but she was afraid if she opened her eyes it would turn out to be just another one of her cruel dreams, nightmares.

"Honey? Are you awake?"

Even though she thought it was a dream, she could picture his face, those palpable handsome wrinkles- some on the forehead some beside his eyes giving away his worries perfectly. He was never a good liar; his angelic face always gave it away. She could always read him like an open book, and she loved him for it.

"Umm hmm" she nodded.

"You’ve got a cold honey"

She felt his lips brush the top of her hair.

"Umm hmm" she nodded again.

"I told you not to drink the water from the fridge at night. Why is it so difficult to drink the warm water by the side of the fridge?"

"Baby?" Elena lazily asked ignoring the scolding he was showering on her so sweetly.

"Hmm?"

Elena felt Evan’s arm around her.

"I saw a scary nightmare" she confessed still not opening her eyes.

"Nightmares are supposed to be scary babe… but the good thing…" he shifted himself more comfortably on her and held her firmly as he continued "is that you always get to wake up by my side…" Evan said in his romantic tone.

She didn’t reply.

"What did you see?" he asked lazily, playing with her hair.

"I saw that I was all alone here. You weren’t here because you left me."

She heard Evan stifling his laughter. Elena could picture his face even now with her eyes closed.

"And??" Evan asked rather teasingly.

"And I was crying… I was crying so bad… because… because"

A single drop of tear fell from her closed eyes but she still couldn’t open them.

Something inside her told her that it was all just a dream, and if she opened her eyes she’ll have to live her worst nightmares for real.

"Because what baby?" Evan sounded more serious now as he brushed a couple of strands away from her face.

"Because you left me all alone at the altar … and you never came back, you never called; you didn’t explain a word to me Evan. And the worse part is that you left me for… for"

Her voice choked in her throat and she was having trouble keeping her breaths even.

"For?"

"For Sarah, Evan. You left me alone at the altar for Sarah." she finished.

Evan didn’t bother to stifle his laughter anymore, instead he burst into it.

"I left you? For Sarah? At the altar? Baby… you do remember that getting married was my plan right? I was the one who begged you to be my wife in front of your high school because"

"Because you were getting older by the minute" Elena finished the sentence for him.

"Yes… I hope you know it was just a dream coz I have no amount of strength to leave you alone, not at the altar… not anywhere even in my dreams."

They stayed quite for a while.

"Hey wait a second. It isn’t one of your diabolical plans is it? I mean creating an illusion that I’m gonna leave you and actually canceling our wedding. You’re not planning on that, are you baby?"

Elena stayed put, feeling Evan’s insecurity build up by the second. She wanted to trouble Evan, just a little bit.

"I mean, Sarah… she’s my best friend. You know that… babe you can’t back off now. You accepted me in front of everyone and… and I don’t know. YOU CAN’T BACK OFF NOW!!!"

The supposed-to-be 25 year old grown up Evan, yelled like a child in despair left with no other means but yelling.

Elena couldn’t help but laugh at her husband-to-be. She opened her eyes slowly letting out her imprisoned laughter to liberty…

But the harsh reality stumbled down on her. There was no Evan holding her tight, it was only her messed up dirty blanket, she was clutching to herself. Her freed laughter choked in her throat, left incomplete.

She started the day, with a fresh set of tears about her eyes and she didn’t even bother to hinder it. She just let it flow freely because…

Evan really did leave her at the altar in front of everyone they loved for… for Sarah, his best friend.
