The Water
A surprise for peter.
It started out as a normal day. My father woke me up at five am to go fishing with him. At half eight we returned home, to our cottage by the shore. Then I leave for school. School is the same, long and boring. After school I go to the beach with my friends, Richard and John. We go cliff diving as we do every week day. Were the best cliff divers in the country?
I stand on the edge of the cliff, naked apart from a pair of blue swimming trunks. The wind blows roughly through my brown hair. I look down towards the dangerous water. The waves are high and strong. The excitement before a dive is amazing and the rush like a drug. I point my hands it the air and dive. I perform a tumble turn in the air before splashing into the water. Holding my breath I swim along the seabed.
I find something lying in the sand. Some thing that's not meant to be able to live under water.
It is a girl. She is sleeping under water. She is still breathing. I am gasping for breath. I swim to the surface bringing the girl with me. I call for my friends. They come quickly to my aid. We drag the girl on to dry land. She begins to cough and splutter. Her skin is a cold blue color. She must be freezing.
I wake from hibernation suddenly. There is a bright light above me. It hurts my eyes to look at it. I cannot see. I cover my eyes with my hands.
"Hello?" I hear someone say. They are talking through the mouth. Who ever it is he is not a mermaid. Only royal mermaids can talk through their mouths, commoners must talk telepathically. I can talk through my mouth I am the princess.
"Hello," I reply. I can see again. The speaker is a boy. My father's plan has worked. I have found the prince already. Who ever found me is the new Mir-prince.
"My name is Peter. I found you under the water, are you okay?"
"I am better than ok, my name is Nerida."
"I will be back in a minute. I'll leave you with my friends, Richard and Connor." I the noticed the two other boys standing behind him. I nodded.
"That would be ok," he ran away from us, up the beach.
When I returned to the beach with my father on my heals, Nerida was watch Richard cliff dive, while chatting casually with Connor. My father was very suppositions. When I told him about the girl he immediately came to the conclusion that she was a mermaid. I had argued with him that she had no tail. His reply was not to believe everything you see or hear.
"What is your name girl?"
"My name is Nerida,"
"Do you know Arana?"
"Yes Arana is my human studies teacher."
"Is she ok?"
"She is back safely but she misses you Allen," She smiled at my father secretively. I was confused...
"Who is Arana?! I asked not amused "And how do you know her!"
"Arana is a mermaid," said Nerida
"There's no such thing as mermaids!"
"Then what am I?"
"You have no tail"
"You just haven't seen it yet!" I turned away from Nerida to my father.
"How do you know a mermaid?"
My father didn't reply. I wait. The awkward silence was broken by Nerida suddenly,
"She is your mother!"
"My mother is dead,"
"NO, she is not, she misses you, she wants me to bring you to her!" I didn't believe it. I looked at my father for reassurance, but I received none.
"I am not a mermaid. I cannot breathe under water."
"You can, you just haven't tried it out yet!"
"STOP!!" my Father shouted. "Stop bickering, please stay with Peter and me for a few days while I think of what to do," He said Tor Nerida. She nodded and my father stormed off the beach.
Both Richard and Connor then cleared there throats.
"Wow, that was awkward," they said in unison. I was so confused.
"I have to be alone right now," is said walking away from them, but hearing Connor say
"God, what a chick," Before I was out of earshot.
