I was right on the edge of reality and unconsciousness, sitting on the fence. But I was definitely leaning towards unconsciousness when my body had other ideas. The pain increased significantly and as a result I was jerked back into reality and all my senses worked double time.
I was somehow lying on top of the mystery man, and was bleeding all over him. We had crashed down on what seemed to be a wooden table, both facing upwards. He still had his arms rightly around my mid section but as I landed on him the jolt had caused the arrow to sink deeper into my flesh and the pain was incredible, I had felt nothing like it before. I wanted to scream in pain but I could barely move. I felt dizzy, like I had been spinning in circles for a few spins too long. Just as I was wondering where we were (and how the hell we got here) screams erupted around me. There was footsteps and yelling all around. The mystery man grunts and pushes me off of him. I roll onto my face, too much in pain to do anything but remain limp. I thought dimly that I was getting blood on my outfit, then remembered I was still wearing the purple gown form (could it really be only?) last night, and found I didn’t care.
There were more gasps from around us.
"What happened?"
"No time. She needs help." Says the smooth current voice.
"Are we too late?" There was a snarling noise.
"No! The arrow is poisoned. I have to take it out."
"No! She will-" An awful pain ripped through me, hotter than fire, colder than ice. I no longer thought that the pain I had felt moments ago was bad. This was so intense I was surprised that I didn’t scream. My whole world was dislodged, I didn’t know which way was up and which was down. I had a falling sensation, but couldn’t feel my body moving. There was no way that anything could save me from falling off the fence, and into unconsciousness this time. And boy did I fall hard.
I awake with the feeling that I had been asleep for a very long time and when the memories of the past days come back I sit up with a sudden start.
"Oh! Oh crap. Ow." I say, clutching my now burning shoulder. Should have stayed lying down.
With my other hand I clutch the sheet to my chin, realizing I was only wearing a bra and underpants.
"Whoa, you scared the-"
"Lay down honey, lay down." Firm hands push me back onto the white bed I was under. Ok, so jerking up like that had not been a good idea, nor a very heroic way to wake up. I open my eyes again and nervously scan the room, but all I could see was a blue plastic curtain looking thing that I couldn’t place. Then it struck me, hospital. These were like those privacy curtain things at the hospital. I was in a hospital bed too, and there was a lady dressed in white next to me. She was the one who had pushed me back into bed. There was also a teenage boy next to me dressed in what seemed to be a school uniform. I had never seen either of them before.
"Who are you?" I gasp, still clutching my bandaged shoulder.
"Why, I am miss Peat, the school nurse."
"School?" I ask, confused. Memories of what looked like a classroom and me lying amongst broken wood came back to me, which only confused me further.
"Yes, dear."
"How did I get here?" The lady looks uncertain.
"Maybe I should-" She stopped talking when the curtains were suddenly pulled back and a man dressed in black steps in.
"I know you." I tell him, as he closes the curtain behind him.
"Do you now?" He asks, approaching the bed, looking serious. He was the man from the forest. I shiver, I would never admit it, but I felt scared and insecure.
"How long has she been awake for?" He asks the nurse.
"About ten seconds." He raises his eye brows questioningly. The teenage boy puts down a needle and leaves without a word.
"I know, she was a little slow." The nurse leans over my with a small light and checks my pupils.
"Tell me dear, have you had any head injuries recently? Been knocked unconscious at all?"
"Recently?" I ask.
"In the last few days." She says, scribbling something down on her chart. I close my eyes, trying to think straight. I was surprised at the challenge.
"Twice…no, three times." I open my eyes, frowning. She looks mildly shocked.
"Three times?" I gulp and nod. My shoulder burned.
"How old are you dear?"
"Sixteen." I say quietly.
"Who knocked you unconscious, dear?" She looked about forty, that explained the use of ’dear’ so much.
"Um…" My eyes dart to the man in black, who was watching my steadily. He made me nervous so I looked back at my blankets.
"I…um…don’t know." I mumble. The nurse and the mystery man exchange a communicating look which I ignore. I rub my forehead with the heel of my palm, trying to clear some of the fog that clouded my thoughts.
"What is your name, girl?" Barks the man in black.
"Oh, um…B-Bree?" I say hesitantly, It almost sounded like a question. He nods once.
"What’s your name?" I ask quietly, his head whips around so fast I cringe back, wondering dimly if I was in trouble. He pauses for a few long moments.
"Luken, Luken Brax." He says slowly. I pause.
"It suits you." I say quietly.
"Do you need some painkillers honey?" I break the eye contact between me and Luken and turn to the nurse.
"Uh…yeah?" She pushes a needle into my arm and I turn to look back at Luken but all I see was an open curtain.
"I’m really tired…"I mumble, the nurse chuckles.
"Sleep." I barely heard her.
I wake up slower this time, slowly becoming aware of my surroundings. It was night time, I think, and late by the looks of it. The curtain was still around me but there was no light coming over the top. There was a small lamp on my bedside table, it glowed softly. And there was Luken, sitting on a wooden chair, leaning over and looking at his hands.
"Luken." I say, he looks up.
"Bree." He sounded, serious, I got the feeling this man didn’t party much.
"Where am I?" He takes a deep breath.
"That’s what I came to talk to you about. I need to tell you some things. And ask you some questions." He waits, looking into my eyes as if expecting an answer.
"Shoot." I say after a moment, lying my head back on the pillow, causing myself to wince at the pain in my shoulder, then trying to hide the wince. I look at him and he starts.
"You are at Bermington college. It is a school for the…blessed. I teach here." He stops again.
"What were you doing in that forest?" I ask quietly.
"Spying."
"On me?"
"Yes, and the people you were with." He looks up to meet my eyes but I look down at my lap.
"Oh."
"How do you know them?"
"You mean Adrian and Paul? I met them at a party." I half-lie. I look up, he was staring at me seriously.
"They were the ones that knocked you unconscious?"
"Well…yes." I say quietly.
"Tell me about it."
"It’s a long boring story, I’m sure you don’t want to hear about it."
"If I didn’t I wouldn’t have asked." I shift uncomfortably again.
"Well I was at this party, kind of a ball thing, and they showed up. I saw Adrian and I freaked and ran but then the other guy, Paul. Just held his hand out and I was knocked unconscious."
"Why did you run?"
"What?" I look up at him.
"Why did you run from Adrian. Had you met him before?"
"I-no. He…he was blue." I say softly. Luken just keeps staring at me.
"I had never seen a blue person before."
"Blue?"
"Yeah. Not like his skin blue just…you have no idea what I am talking about do you?"
"You saw his power centre." Luken states simply.
"Yeah." I was surprised, he did know what I was talking about.
"How?"
"I-what?" I ask, confused.
"How did you see his power centre?"
"I looked at him." Lukens frown deepened.
"I don’t understand." This sounded rare for him.
"It’s my…power. Gift. Blessing. Whatever."
"You see power centres?" He asks me. I nod.
"What colour is mine." I break the intense eye contact and play with a loose thread in my sheet.
"I don’t know." I mumble. There was a few moments pause.
"I don’t believe you." I jerk my head up.
"What?"
"I don’t believe you."
"Why not?" I was surprised, hurt even. He doesn’t reply.
"I…" I try to think of how to explain this.
"Control your power and tell me what colour my power centre is. Then I will believe you."
"I don’t really control it, it kinda controls me."
"I don’t understand."
"That happen a lot?" He doesn’t smile. I look at the sheet again. This was an awkward conversation.
"It’s like…a vision. Or putting on funny glasses. It just kind of flickers in and out, every now and then. I never really know when. And it shows me…people. And what they feel. And their-"
"Power centres."
"Am I a freak?" He sits back.
"No! Of course not."
"Oh." I look at the sheet. I wanted to curl up, or at least sit up but my shoulder prevented me. I felt vulnerable in this position. I sniff once.
"I think you should attend this college." I look up again, startled.
"What? Why?" I ask.
"Because you are gifted and you should learn to control your power."
"I feel stuff too."
"I beg your pardon?"
"I mean…I feel things. Like…I get this thing telling me to pack an umbrella, so I do, and it rains. Stuff like that, it’s kinda hard to explain…"I wish I had kept my mouth shut.
"I understand. What happened after the party?" He changed my line of thought.
"I woke up in a car and told them to let me go. Like, they had kidnapped me? And the guy shoved me and I fell into the door and knocked myself out. He didn’t mean to."
"Why are you standing up for them." I look up and Luken was seething, suddenly angry.
"I- I don’t know, I just, I…" I force myself to snap my mouth shut. This was the first man I had ever met that made me stammer this way. Maybe it was just the painkillers.
"That guy shot you. You almost died." The word died chilled me to the bone. I had never as much as broken a bone before these last few days, or knocked myself out. I force back unwanted tears.
"And then you came along. My hero." I let a small smile loose.
"They marked you."
"They…what?"
"Marked you. On the back of your neck." I touch the back of my neck but couldn’t feel anything, except it hurt when I touch it.
"What are you taking about? What’s a mark?" He just looks at me.
"It’s like a tattoo. They give it to you when you enter their property. So they know you have permission to be there. Do you not remember receiving it?" I totally panicked.
"I was unconscious, I woke up inside and I-" I gulp. Luken doesn’t say anything.
"Sorry. This is happening kind of fast for me." I say after a minute.
"I understand." He says again.
"Who are they?" That didn’t sound right but Luken understood.
"They are the Killawalans. They are…our enemies."
"Who’s our?" I ask.
"The Killawalans practice dark magic."
"Yeah, I know." He narrows his eyes.
"And you don’t?" I ask him. He shakes his head.
"No."
"Right." I nod.
"I dropped out of school." I blurt out.
"Your parents didn’t mind." I laugh once.
"No…I’m an orphan."
"I’m sorry." I shrug.
"It doesn’t seem that bad because I have never known anything else. It just is…you adapt." I shrug again. The silence stretches out. My shoulder burns.
"Why did you say ‘come to me’?" I ask after a few more moments.
"I beg your pardon?"
"In the forest. You said ‘come to me’." He looks at me, then looks me up and down once. I blush.
"So I could transport you."
"You-what?"
"I can teleport."
"So that how we ended up landing on a table?"
"Yes, sorry. I didn’t have much time to focus."
"I imagine not. Why did you want to teleport me?"
"I don’t understand."
"I mean. I was marked and one of those evil guys and why did you bring me here?" He sits back in his chair, taken back.
"Don’t you want to be here?"
"Well, I didn’t want to be there." I counter. He mumbles something.
"But how did you know?" I continue. He looks into my eyes again, and again the feeling there was intense. He searched them. I don’t know what he was looking for or what he found but a moment later he spoke softly.
"I don’t know." He whispered. The silence continued until he suddenly stands up.
"Sleep. I hope your shoulder gets better." He starts to leave.
"Wait!" I say as he reaches the curtain. He pauses.
"I want to start…school here?" He turns back to look at me and searches my eyes again.
"But I don’t have much money." I continue into the silence.
"It’s free. Everything is supplied." Oh. That’s odd.
"I will talk with your teachers tomorrow. You can start classes when you are ready." And with that he leaves. I sit back, my head in total a wreck as thoughts floated around through the fog. I was confused. What had I just done? I look at the closed curtain that he had just walked out of and came up with two words for our encounter.
Intense. Awkward.
