The Vampires Pet - Chapter 6
I know its been a while but THIS is the WOW chapter so READ IT!!!
"Hey guys, we were beginning to worry." Damien says, with so much nonchalance and sarcasm lacing his voice I frown at him but he doesn’t look my way. Talk about spoiling the mood, and if anyone should be pissed it should be me. He pulled a gun on me for crying out loud! Who carries a gun now days?!?!
"Just burning off some extra steam." Cole says, and winks at me. I smile as he tells them he was going to hit the showers and disappears into the next room.
THE NEXT DAY
I stumble into the kitchen, only half away and in search of sugar. If I were an adult I would be searching for coffee but I hated the stuff so I was searching for sugar. Damien and Cole were at the dining room table discussing god knows what. Halfway through the re-runs of the Mr. Bean cartoon and three quarters of the way through my bowl of cereal Lucy dances into the room looking bright and chirpy.
"Come on Kasey." She says, grabbing my hand as she begins pulling me from the room.
"What? Wait! Where are we going?"
"Shopping of course!"
"Err, no." I say sternly. She lets go of my hand and puts both of hers on her hips.
"Yes."
"I hate shopping." I tell her.
"You still need clothes."
"I’ll survive." I disagree.
"Kasey, I am taking you shopping whether you like it or not." Cole and Damien had silenced and were looking on with mild interest on their faces. I turn to them now.
"Guys, a little help?" They stay silent and I glare at them.
"Kasey, what kind of teenage girl doesn’t like shopping?"
"Maybe I’m a tomboy." She grabs my hand again, towing me away.
"Think of it as getting even because I saved you."
"You didn’t save me Cole did." I point out, trying to get my hand back, her grip was surprisingly strong. Were angels stronger than humans, kind of like vampires? Wow, being human sucked. Lucy looks outraged that I would say that, and opens her mouth to say something.
"Ok, I’m going!" I say quickly, walking out the door, wishing I could take the words back. Lucy looks smug in the elevator and stalks in front of me as we walk down the street and I mutter darkly behind her.
Half an hour later we turned into a shop. I look up at the sign with mild interest and groan internally. Lucky I had already made the decision to put up with today because they actually did save me and really I would do anything for them. Over the next few hours I got my hair cut and styled, my nails done, waxed, a spa and a massage. Then I got dragged into an expensive clothes shop where I was forced to try on a dozen different outfits.
"Oh your so thin!" The shop assistant exclaims when I was in a more than revealing dress. I grunt, I had lost about half my body weight last week and was only just starting to get my appetite back. Ok, so not half my body weight but still…
"I like your hair, it’s nice and glossy."
"She got it styled this morning." Lucy chimes proudly.
"Oh you can tell, she looks beautiful!" The shop assistant exclaims. Suck up. I turn back to the change rooms and pull off a small green dress and pull on another. It took me a minute to get the zip up, it was in a weird spot, but I finally get it up. I flick my hair out of the back and turn the lock in the door. They didn’t say anything, they just stood there. I look down.
"What’s wrong?" I ask, confused.
"Nothing honey, you really are beautiful." I look up in surprise and turn to the mirror. Was that really me?
My hair was glossy and wavy, falling past my shoulders. My legs were smooth and delicate looking. I was wearing a pink dress that has a tight bodice and flowed out in layers from the hips. The dress managed to look sexy even though it finished only a couple of inches above my knees, an entirely respectable length.
I remember myself when they must have first seen me, barely dressed, dirty, blood, barely able to walk. I was glad I could make a better impression though I can’t imagine them ever forgetting the first one. Or at least Cole wouldn’t, he actually saw me in the cell. I had to remember to thank him again too.
"That’s it. No more dresses. That’s the one." Lucy was standing behind me, I could see her reflection. I look at myself again, and as I do I realise I had missed this years school formal. Then I thought about my friends, what would they think had happened to me? And my parents? Oh my parents! They would be sick with worry! I should call them…but what could I say?
"Ok." I say, turning back to the change rooms.
"Oh, just leave it on honey, here I’ll cut the tag."
I thought that would be it for the day, it was mid afternoon. But no, I didn’t realise that there was shoe shopping and jewelry shopping and make up! Oh god, I had been wearing these heels for hours now and I could wait to get off my feet.
"Where are we going?" I had finally come to my senses and although Lucy said we had finished, we were not heading to the direction of the hotel.
"Out to dinner, I rang Cole and Damien earlier and told them to meet us there."
"Oh." Is all I say. God my feet hurt! These black strappy heels were going to kill me! When I look up again we were entering a restaurant, a very fancy restaurant. The guy out front even bowed as we went in.
"Do you have a reservation, Ms?" A man in a tux asked just inside the door.
"Yes, table for four, under Ruby."
"Ah yes, your friends are already here." The man motioned for us to follow him and we walked deep into a restaurant.
"Just over there, a waiter will be over shortly." He turns and hurries back, there was already people waiting to be seated.
Cole and Damien seemed to be in deep conversation at the table but they stopped when Lucy and I got there. Their mouths hung open as they look me up and down. But I only wanted to look at Cole, would this erase his first memory of me? I hoped so. His eyes said that at very least he wouldn’t forget it. They stand up as we sit down, Lucy looking smug, me feeling really embarrassed though I don’t know why, I should be proud. I knew I looked good.
"I was wondering why you guys took all day." Damien says, sitting down.
"Kasey, you look amazing." Cain says, smiling gently at me,
"Thanks." I say, blushing.
"Ah hem." Lucy says loudly, Cain just rolls his eyes at her.
"Lucy, you look spectacular as always." Damien says, kissing her hand. She giggles and nods at him as if she were the Queen.
I was surprised at myself when I found that I felt happy and safe in the company of these…angels. It was still such a weird word, yet vampire wasn’t? Huh, I need therapy. But I liked sitting here with my friends, it felt right.
"So what’s the special occasion?" I ask, motioning my hands around the resteraunt. They share a special glance.
"Actually, there is a special occasion. We have decided we can take you home now!"
My stomach drops through the floor. You know those moments in movies where time slows down and then the person is just sitting there panicking ad nothing is moving? That was what I was having right now. They wanted to get rid of me, they wanted to get rid of me.
Dinner passes in a blur, as does the ret of that night and the next morning. Before I had a clue what was going on I was in a car and it was early, before sunrise even. I was in the backseat with Cole who was looking sleepy. I fiddle nervously, I wanted to ask them to train me, but how could I do it now? Cole shoots me a funny look, I try and smile at him.
"What’s wrong? A few days ago you couldn’t wait to go home." He leans over and whispers. It was mid morning now, we were near my house. It was now or never.
"I was kinda hoping you would train me." Cole freezes and blinks at me. Completely taken off guard.
"Um, no." He turns and sits ramrod straight in his chair.
"Well, why not? You said I needed to be trained!" I was yelling now, I knew I had Lucy and Damien’s attention now too.
"Kasey, no. You need to go home."
"They know where I live! And it’s not like I can just walk away from my family! What if they come back? What if they hurt my family?" I knew that a few things I had said struck home with Cole but his determines doesn’t falter.
"No, Kasey."
"Kasey-" Lucy starts.
"Stop the car!" Lucy who was driving, instinctively slams the breaks down. I open the door and jump out.
"Kasey we can just drop everything and start training you!" Cole says, following me onto the sidewalk.
"But you said yourself that I needed to be trained and I lived in a bad area and everything! I like being with you, I feel safe." My voice lowered with the last sentence.
"Kasey, we will not train you. Get in the car, we are taking you home!"
"Screw you!" I say, and start stomping down the sidewalk.
"Kasey, wait!"
"No! You don’t care about me anyway! Just piss off!" Rage had completely taken over as I walked away from them. But I knew that I wouldn’t regret it later, they deserved this. I hear them talking for a while, then I see their car speed past me. With the wind from its wake hits my face it feels cold and I realise that I was crying. I hastily wipe the tears away and after five minutes of stomping wildly I look around.
I was surprised by how near home I actually was. Only a few kilometers away. I start towards me house. The walk was good actually, it gave me time to cool down and think. But it didn’t help, I still had no idea what I was going to tell my parents. That I ran away? Got kidnapped? Or just pretend that I couldn’t remember anything. Would that work? I still had no idea what I was going to say as I take a deep breath and turn into my street. As I turn I had a bad feeling and what I saw just made it worse. Though my mind was frozen my body took over. I turn invisible (By choice!) and keep walking forward.
There was police tape around my front yard, and cars and people everywhere. Like the whole neighborhood had turned out to see my house and there was a police force, and detectives and everything. I sneak past, mind still frozen but when I saw the side wall my body froze too. I stood still in shock and horror. My side wall, usually a large expansion of cream colored paint that was spotless was now covered in red writing.
YOU KILLED MY BROTHER! I WILL FIND YOU! D.
And that red paint looked an awful lot like blood.
