The Vampires Pet - Chapter 4

Kasey spies on a private ceremony, where her rescuers contact their god. Kasey becomes even more confused.
My knee’s went weak, lucky I was still sitting down.
"Oh." I draw out the word, then realise they were waiting for something more.
"Ok." I say slowly.
"You don’t believe us." Damien says flatly.
"It’s a little hard to comprehend."
"I’m surprised you hadn’t figured it out earlier." I look up, surprised.
"Oh come on, I only learnt demons existed about two weeks ago, I didn’t even know angels existed!" I blurt out. Damien raises his eye brows.
"How long have you been a slayer?"
"About a year." I say truthfully.
"How many vampires have you killed?" Lucy asks, I shrug.
"A couple of hundred." It was only a slight exaggeration, after all.
"You’re kidding." Their faces were comical disbelief.
"Is that a lot?" Cole takes a deep breath.
"Yes, that is a lot." He says slowly.
"Where do you live Kasey?" I tell him and his eyes widen in horror and disbelief.
"You’re kidding." I hesitate.
"No, why what’s wrong with _____?" They exchange another glance.
"I didn’t know there were any slayers there." Hmm, that rung a bell too.
"Well, here I am!" I say, holding out my arms, they don’t smile.
"That’s a dangerous town to live in, Kasey. Vampire wise." I frown, there did seem to be an awful lot of vampires, considering people didn’t know about them or anything.
"Well, most of them weren’t very bright. And they weren’t very strong either, not as strong as Derrick, Justin and Bax." I shiver at the painful memories, hand stroking the side of my bruised face.
"You met all of the princes?" Damien asks, disbelieving. I nod.
"Who trained you Kasey?" Cole asks, I sigh.
"Would you believe me if I said no one?"
"No." I grind my teeth.
"Too bad, no one."
"Then how did you find out about vampires?" Lucy asks.
"I killed one, by accident. I thought he was mugging me." She looks doubtful and I sigh again.
"It’s true! Why doesn’t anyone believe me?"
"How did you kill him?"
"I stabbed him, with a broken crate. I think a homeless man lived there or something." They still look doubtful.
"Anyway, I thought I was asking the questions here!"
"What did you want to know?" Damien asks, I wrap arms around myself.
"I would like to know more about angels. I would like to know when I can go home." The room was silent.
"What do you think, Cole?" Damien turns to him, after a considerable silence. Cole frowns.
"I don’t know, she isn’t hurt that bad physically, but mentally."
"I agree, she needs some healing time. And we need to find out more about her." Lucy chirps in.

Suddenly I felt like I wasn’t in the room any more, they seemed to have completely forgotten I was sitting right here. They ramble on, back and forth, ignoring me. I felt invisible, but became lost in thought. Mentally? They thought I was crazy? I shiver, was I? If I thought about it now, I would be scared to leave this room, fearing there were vampires hiding in the elevators waiting for me. Did that make me crazy? Did that make my psychotic? Do I nee to see a shrink?

My thoughts were shrilly interrupted by a long, piercing scream. Lucy was looking at me, but not quite focusing on me. I look down. Oh crap, I was invisible! Before that thought had barely formed my body became visible again. Everyone in the room was staring at me and then, before I could even move, someone grabbed me.

The next thing I knew I had been picked up and shoved against the wall, and Damien was pointing a gun straight at my chest.
"I’m sorry! I won’t do it again! I promise!" I look at the gun in distress and panic.
"What the fuck!" Cole practically screams, jumping up from his seat at the wooden table to come closer.
"I’m sorry, I won’t do it again, I promise! I won’t do it again!" I hadn’t been able to control that power in a few days, though I had tried on my own a few times. Now the one time it happened was by accident, and they weren’t pleased, to say the least.
"Kasey!" Cole growls, standing right behind Damien. But I couldn’t look at him, I was only looking at the gun. My chest was rising and falling rapidly where it was almost touching it.
"If that is her real name! She could be a spy, a demon, obviously!" Completely distracted I screw up my face in disgust.
"I’m not a demon! Eew!" Then I remember the gun.
"Humans don’t have powers." Damien cocks the gun, I felt so much blood drain from my face I must have been as white as a sheet of paper.
"I won’t do it again." I whisper, never taking my eyes off the loaded gun, it was sleek and shiny.
"Damien! Don’t shoot her for Christ’s sake!" Lucy yells, coming over too. Now all three of them were standing in front of me, looking at me like a freak, while I just stared at the gun. This was the first time I had seen a gun up close. Maybe it would be the last thing I would see.
"I promise I won’t do it again! I can usually control it." I was still whispering, I didn’t know why. They just stared at me. Finally Lucy takes a deep breath.
"Damien, put the gun away."
"She could be a spy!" He repeats with a snarl. But slowly, he takes the gun away from my heaving chest. And yet I don’t relax one bit. I had never had a gun pointed at me before. Then all of a sudden Damien turns on his heel and stalks out of the room.
"If he thinks I was a spy why would he leave you alone with me?" I ask, hating the silence.
"Because he knows that we can handle someone as weak as you." Cole turns to me, eyes blazing.
"Cole, quit it. Kasey, explain." Lucy says, sounding mother-like. I take a deep breath.
"I’m human. I’m not a demon, I swear. And I don’t know, I have kind of always been able to do it at will, until about a week ago, where I found I couldn’t do it anymore." Though it had been the last thing on my mind at the time. They just stay silent, what more was there to say?
"You should have told us." Cole spits.
"I had other things on my mind." I say, looking away.
"Can you do anything else?"
"What? No."
"Kasey…" Lucy starts, trailing off.
"Go to bed, Kasey." Snaps Cole, I stare at him, more hurt than I probably should have been. He always made me feel young and clumsy, all of them did. Angels…are they pulling my leg? I turn and walk into a bedroom and close the door softly behind me.

I felt nervous. I had really stuffed up my relationship with the people who were probably the only people around who knew how to help me. I fall into a heavy slumber, still weak, even though it was only just becoming evening.

Because I fell asleep so soon I wake early, just before dawn. I creep into the bathroom that was shared between two of the lush bedrooms. The bench was marble, it was lovely. The mirrors were perfectly clean, though I avoid my reflection. I go back into my bedroom and was about to go into the lounge room when my own name drew my attention to the conversation outside.
"Is Kasey still asleep?"
"Out like a log."
"Let’s do this now then, before she wakes up."

Curiosity sparked in me but it wasn’t that that caused me to sneak in on them. It was a fear that maybe they were hiding something from me, maybe they were demons after all. I creep into the bathroom and stare at the mirror for a few long moments. Then my reflection disappeared. Good. I sneak into the other bedroom, it was empty but the door was ajar. Good, I slipped through into the living area without being noticed. I stare at the undecipherable scene unfolding before me.

The furniture had been pushed out of the way of the living room, the lights were out. Lucy, Damien and Cole were only illuminated by a small candle burning in front of them. They were sitting facing the middle, as much in a circle as three people could be. All of the elements of the earth seemed to be represented, who were they praying to? The thick drapes were drawn together though dawn had not yet come.
"God Leana, we call to you now, with offerings of nature, to ask for your guidance and support." This wasn’t something I should be watching, but I couldn’t tear myself away form the images that were forming right in front of my eyes. I prayed that my shaky powers did not choose this moment to make me visible, then realised that Cole Lucy and Damien all had their eyes closed. A figure, hazy at first, appeared. It was a lady, with long blonde hair, wearing a long white dress. She was beautiful.
"My daughter, my sons, I accept your offerings with grace. What a lovely apple tree you have given me." The solid people in the rooms open their eyes again.
"Leana, we seek you guidance."
"I have been watching you three, as I do always. You have had an interesting time since our last encounter. I see you made a new friend." Damien looks hard like he was trying not to snort.
"You are referring to the girl, Kasey?" The woman nods gracefully, I could still see the tv through her semi transparent form.
"We saved her from the vampires."
"I know. I am disappointed in you Cole."
"I am sorry to have disappointed you, mistress. What, may I ask, have I done wrong?" His voice was obviously hurt.
"How long have you had the girl in your company?"
"Around thirty hours." Had it really been that long? It didn’t feel like it.
"And yet you have failed to heal her." There was a pause.
"I am sorry, mistress."
"You have your gift for a reason Cole."
"Yes mistress."
"We are unsure, Leana, what we should do with the girl?"
"Do with her?" Asks the god. God?
"Yes, mistress. I am growing to distrust her. We are not sure if we should return her to her family or train her or…?" It was Damien who spoke. Leana paused looking thoughtful.
"I think you should keep her company…for now. For a few days at least. After that she will need to return home."
"She is not a Named, Leana. She is highly untrained. Is she a danger to our discovery?"
"No. Feel free to axplain a few things to her, I am sure she is feeling very confused about things at the moment."
"Yes, Leana." They all murmur.
"Cole, be gentle." She says softly, as if speaking to a slightly misbehaving son. He looked a little confused, of course there were many different meanings to those two words but he bows his head.
"Yes mistress." I noticed Leana was slowly fading.
As she fades, she turns, and smiles straight at me. Looking me in the eye. I would freeze if I hadn’t already been frozen for the last five minutes.
She knew I was there.
But she wasn’t angry.
Then she disappears.

Feeling totally and utterly confused and yes, a little guilt, I sneak back into my room and get into bed, pretending to be asleep. I lay there for hours, feeling too tired to make sense of any information I had gathered in the last day or two. And there was a lot. And none of it made sense. Angels? What the f***? I sigh into my pillow. Long after the sun had risen, the air conditioner clicked on as the room began to heat rapidly. I finally come out of bed and try to appear sleepy as I wander into the lounge room. The candles were gone, Lucy was cooking in the kitchen.
"Oh, good! You’re finally up!" I smile a little, hoping it didn’t look too strained. Smiling was always a task now days.
"Hi." I say, I felt sad that my voice was so small, what happened to the old, bright me? I missed her.
"Where are Damien and Cole?" I ask, looking around the room.
"Oh, they just went out for a little while."
"Oh, ok." I slide onto a bar stool at the bench and Lucy slips a plate in front of me.
"You must be hungry." I try to smile again and pick up the knife and fork. The plate was loaded; bacon, eggs, toast, hash brown and orange juice. I didn’t really like orange juice but I drank it anyway.
"How do you become an angel?" I ask, then take a bite of toast to have something to do with my mouth. Lucy doesn’t skip a beat.
"We’re not sure exactly, we all just kind of…woke up as one."
"What do you do?"
"Fight against demons, vampires, werewolves-"
"Werewolves?!" I yelp, dropping the toast. Lucy looks at me.
"Yes, werewolves. We also help humans affected by them, and have meetings with other people on our side."
"Other people on your side?"
"Named, humans, other angels, or other creatures in the battle."
"Battle." I say flatly, this was sounding really storybook type.
"Don’t get us wrong, Kasey. Even angels aren’t perfect, but as far as we see it we are fighting for the better side." I nod to that at least.
"Can all of you heal?"
"No, that’s just Cole."
"Do you have any other powers?" Lucy pauses, pushing back her blonde bangs.
"I’ll tell you some other time." I stare at her, when she looks up I look down. Though I had a million questions milling around in my mind I couldn’t seem to put them into words so I just sit there and eat my breakfast, moving to the couch as I do so.

When I was finished Lucy came and sat beside me.
"Kasey." She says in her softest tone.
"Yes?" I say hesitantly.
"Let’s talk."
