There have been no real downsides reported for protective skins except that you should invest in some of the quality brands and avoid the cheaper knock offs. The price differential isn't really that much; however, the quality difference is quite noticeable. Before you waste your money and jeopardize your iPhone or iPod, you'll want to consider spending a little more to get the best.
