The Untrusted 9
Azrea goes out side....meets two interesting people....and they tell her a little more about Syrian.....but what will happen when Syrian himself learns of this?.......
Azrea woke to the silence of the cave. She yawned and snuggled back into her covers to lie in the warmth for a few more minutes. Azrea must have had fallen asleep for she found herself waking up again. This time she got up and out of bed so she wouldn’t fall asleep again and waist more of the morning. After she tidied herself up, and straightened up the room, she decided to go down to the kitchen to make breakfast. This time instead of eggs, ham, and bread; Azrea found ingredients to make an omelet in the big cupboard. So Azrea made herself and omelet. As she was cooking Azrea, at one point, turned around to see Syrian lurking in the shadows at the doors entrance. Azrea smiled at him, "Want an omelet?" she asked.
"Why do you cook?" he asked coming further in to the room and totally ignoring Azrea question, "that cupboard will give you any food that you’re thinking of,"
Azrea shrugged her shoulders, "I figured that, but I like cooking. That and it keeps me occupied for a little while,"
Syrian walked over to Azrea and looked at her omelet, which was practically done, "So how does this work? I thought it was broken," Syrian said almost to himself, but Azrea knew he had directed the question at her.
"Well first off I have to ask, did you ever turn it on?" Azrea asked turning back to her omelet.
"How can I turn it on when I don’t know how?" Syrian asked and Azrea could hear irritation in his voice. She turned to face him only to see him leaving.
"Where are you going? Does this mean you will skip out on food again?" But Syrian didn’t answer ether of her questions. "He never answers me," Azrea grumbled as she put her omelet on a plate so she could eat it. When she was done, like yesterday, she washed the dishes and put them away. Azrea then strode out of the kitchen, making her way to the intersection. She stopped in the middle of the intersection as she debated what she wanted to do. ‘Well I can go to my room, but the only thing to do there is sleep or I can go outside and explore or something since there’s nothing else to do in here,’ She thought to herself, and without thinking what Syrian might do or want her to do, Azrea headed for the outdoors. To her relief she saw that it wasn’t raining, like it had been yesterday. Happy to be able to go outside she didn’t even hesitate to walk straight out.
Azrea took ten steps before she stopped and realized her stupidity. She had stepped outside of Syrians’ territory without a second thought. For all she knew a monster could have been right outside the caves entrance. Yet here she was standing nine feet away from the only protection she had and only now only realizing the danger. ‘Maybe coming out here wasn’t my most brilliant idea,’ Azrea thought as she listened intently for the slightest sound of danger, but five minutes later Azrea had yet to hear anything. She knew she should go back inside, but curiosity over came her need to be cautious. So after listening once more and taking a scan around the area;
Azrea started forward again, but with a little more vigilance this time. As Azrea’s nerves slowly settled down she took in more about her surroundings. She finally noticed that the afternoon air was nice and warm, but it was a pleasant warm. The grass under her feet was still covered with dew and that the forest was shrouded in a peaceful calm. Even though there were no birds or animals singing and playing in the trees; Azrea could still feel wild life growing all around her. The beauty that surrounded Azrea made her smile and made her want to run around like a child on a playground. She pushed the urge aside and just absorbed the silent beauty that she was in. Walking, she watched not only her surroundings, but also the ground so she wouldn’t trip or fall over something. When she got to the stream, in the middle of the clearing, she jumped over it to avoid getting wet. But when Azrea landed on the other side the ground under nether her collapsed and with dirt and sticks raining down beside her, Azrea fell into a hole full of water.
Her head went under and she was unable to get it above the surface until she found her footing on the slippery mud under the water. Azrea coughed up the water she had inhaled and started gasping for air. She rubbed water out of her eyes and looked up. From where she was, Azrea could tell the edge of the bank was at least three feet higher then she could reach. Water from the stream flowed into the hole; yet the water wasn’t rising, so she wouldn’t be able to swim to the top.
Suddenly Azrea heard voices above, "I wonder what we caught."
"I think it’s a nymph, you know they love water,"
"Yes, but it could also be a Fiend,"
"This near a dragons den, I don’t think so,"
Azrea watched the opening of the hole and nearly gasped when two figures poked their heads over the rim of the hole.
"Nope, not a Fiend," they said together, "And not a nymph ether," Azrea recognized the faces instantly; it was the twins that had annoyed Syrian the other day.
"Are you the ones that did this?" Azrea asked glaring at them.
They both snickered and shook their heads, again both in unison, "No, we didn’t do that. You did that yourself,"
"Why would I do this to myself? I wasn’t the one that put the hole here, you two were."
"Yes, we did put the hole here," one of the boys said.
"But we weren’t the ones that made you step on it," the other finished.
"Well that’s true, but if you hadn’t put this hole here then I wouldn’t have fallen in it," Azrea countered.
"You also wouldn’t have fallen in it if you hadn’t walked over this way," one of them said.
"So it is entirely your fault," the other said, again finishing each other’s sentences.
Azrea sighed in exasperation as she realized that she wasn’t going to win this argument, "Even so, your fault or mine, I can’t get out of this hole by myself,"
The twins looked at each other and then the next thing Azrea knew they had disappeared. She couldn’t believe it; they had just left her here in the cold and wet muddy water. Just as she was getting more the irritated and frustrated trying to think of how to get out, a long green twisty vine appeared and then the twins heads peaked over the edge, Azrea eyed it, "What do you want me to do with this?" she asked.
"Use it as a rope," they said.
"But won’t it break?" She asked moving a little closer to it. Suddenly Azrea lost her grip on the muddy ground and fell under the water again. She came up coughing and spitting out water.
"Just use the vine if you don’t want to stay down there any longer," they said and Azrea could tell they were laughing quietly.
Unsure if this was a good idea she took a hold of the vine and started pulling herself up. It wasn’t easy for the walls were slick with mud, but the vine was strong enough that it didn’t break as she made her way up slowly. Finally panting with the effort, and with the help of the twins, Azrea was able to get over the edge. She collapsed on the hard ground and caught her breath; as she listened to the twins complain about her ruining their hole.
Finally Azrea was able to breathe normally again and she sat up, "So why do you have a hole by the stream?" she asked, curiously and a little incredulously.
They looked at her at the same time, "Because we were seeing if we could catch anything. If it worked then we could use it for hunting, but all we caught was you and humans don’t taste good," they explained their manner still full of mischief.
"So you eat raw meat?" Azrea asked a little green at the thought. Azrea herself likes her meat medium rare, but not raw.
"Yes, but sometimes we barbeque it to give it a certain flavor," they said smiling.
Azrea didn’t say anything to this; instead she smiled back at them.
"By the way, aren’t you the one we saw yesterday with Syrian?" they asked.
That’s when Azrea remembered whose company she was in and what they had done yesterday. They hadn’t been mean to her, but they were dragons and they had shown that they could be quiet vicious. At that moment Azrea wanted to get back to the sanctuary of the cave. She quickly got up and backed away from the twins.
The twins gave her quizzical looks, "What are you doing?"
This made Azrea stop, "Well, your dragons. How do I know I can trust you?" She asked.
"It’s ok; we don’t harm anything that doesn’t harm us first. Well unless they deserve it," They said, and Azrea could hear the honesty as plainly as someone could hear the wind in the trees, "Oh, we have been quiet rude. We haven’t introduced our selves yet,"
"I’m phoenix," said the one on the right.
"And I’m Fury," the one on the left said, but Azrea knew that as soon as they moved she wouldn’t know which was which.
For the third time in this world Azrea introduced herself, "I’m Azrea Fierily,"
The twins looked at each other then back at Azrea, "Cool name,"
Azrea smiled, "Thanks," then added as an afterthought, "I’ve got a question,"
"Well we really don’t want to stand here any longer so let’s go find ourselves a place to sit while we answer your question," They said and then they started past Azrea and further into the forest. At first Azrea hesitated, but then shrugged her shoulders. ‘They are dragons after all. If I get attacked they would be able to help me.’ She thought as she followed.
They were able to find a big willow that had wide branches they could all sit on. As Azrea was climbing to her branch she noticed that she wasn’t wet or muddy any more. She looked questioningly at the twins, but they were too busy talking to each other to notice her look. Once they were all settled Azrea again asked the question, "So I was wondering, if you don’t harm anything that doesn’t harm you first then why did you threaten Syrian yesterday?"
A grin spread a crossed the twins faces, "Because it’s fun to irritate him," they said in unison with mischievousness written all over their faces.
Azrea smiled at the two twins and had to shake her head at their play, "Aren’t you afraid he will try to kill you one of these times?"
"No," they said shaking their heads, "He may hate and not trust us because we play such mean tricks, but he knows we are not to be blamed for the situation he is in. He sees us only as annoying pests with too much time on our hands," they said and all thought they were smiling; their smile somehow held sadness as if they pitied Syrian.
"What situation is he in? I get that he lives alone, but I thought that he did that himself," Azrea said confused.
The twins looked at each other, but didn’t say anything. Yet in the end it was as if they agreed upon something; for they both looked at Azrea with the same determination, "We don’t know if we should be the one to tell you this," one of them said.
"But we know that Syrian would never tell you,"
"So we will,"
"That way you know what is going on,"
"So you don’t feel left out and confused," They both said and their solemn faces said that they too had, had the information withheld from them at one point in their lives. It was quiet for a few seconds before they continued, "We don’t know the exact story, for we were still in our eggs when all of this happened. So because of that we only know what our older brother told us, and what we have figured out on our own."
"So you…-"
"If you want to hear this then please don’t ask questions until we are done," they said with serious faces. Azrea didn’t say anything, but nodded her head to signify that she would stay silent. "Now this happened almost three hundred years ago," Azrea was about to question that, but a look from the twins made her close her mouth, "That is counting in human years though. In dragon years Syrian would still only be a dragonet, practically a young child. Now before we go on we should tell you the life span of the dragons so have more understanding of who we are. After a dragon hatches it is then known as a Hatchling. The Hatchlings age ranges from 0-150 years old and once it turns 150 it then becomes a Dragonet. Dragonets age ranges from 150-500 and from 500 it is a Juvenile until 700. At 700 years old the Juvenile becomes a young adult until it turns 1000 and then it is a full adult. Then 2000 years later the dragon goes from an adult to a Wyrm and lives until it gets sick and dies or until another dragon kills the Wyrm."
"Now even though we are talking about dragons we also are talking about Draconians for both species have about the same life span. The only difference is Draconians are able to turn into humans when they turn into Dragonets." The twins explained, "Anyways, as we were saying Syrian was 697 years old, still a dragonet, when this happened. That day the flock was going out hunting and Syrian would have gone with them, but our mother draconian was sick. Now even though mother was sick it didn’t mean that Syrian had to stay; but Damon, his older brother, suggested it saying he wasn’t quiet old enough any way. And it was true; he wasn’t old enough and the only reason he was almost able to go was because for some reason he matured faster than all the other Hatchlings ever had.
So he was able to turn human and fly before all the rest. It’s not unheard of for a draconian, but it’s rare so we think Damon was a little jealous and that’s why he suggested Syrian to stay behind.
Anyway, after the flock leaves Syrian is stuck with the duty to watch over the queen; even though there is no real threat. No one really knows what happened while the flock was gone, but when they got back the queen, our mom was dead and Syrian was beside her, crying. Our father the king instantly blamed Syrian for killing the queen; because if it had been a usual attack they should have killed Syrian along with her so there wouldn’t have been witnesses, but he was there alive and the Queen was dead, our mother Murdered! So, furious and grief stricken was our father the king that he tried to kill Syrian, but Syrian somehow managed to escape. Ever since then for as long as we have known Syrian has lived his life in solitude and, with mistrust and hatred, has never let anyone near him because he fears betrayal again. At least that’s what we figure," The twins said.
Azrea mind was now swarming with multiple questions, so she started asking the first question without even realizing it, "How can he do that? Even though he is the king of dragons doesn’t give him to try and take someone’s life just because he THINKS that Syrian was the one that did it. He doesn’t have any proof that Syrian did it and why would Syrian do such a thing any way?"
The twins looked almost shocked at Azrea’s outburst, but they soon hid it with smiles, "He was crazed with grief so he didn’t think to think it through. Plus if Syrian didn’t do it then who did? Our clan didn’t have any real enemies, so they were safe from other Draconians,"
"Well for all he knew it could have been a neighboring clan wanting to start a war or something. It doesn’t even have to be a draconian if she was sick anything could have killed her. Heck, it could have been Damon himself for all anyone knew," Azrea said, she knew she sounded insane, but it just wasn’t fair that Syrian got blamed for something that he probably didn’t do.
The twins shrugged their shoulders, "Only Syrian knows the truth, but he doesn’t trust anyone enough to tell them,"
Nodding her head in agreement "Yeah, I know what you mean. Even though I’ve showed him only kindness, he keeps me at arm’s length and is barely civil to me when are in the same room. He won’t eve answer any of my questions, even though I am still new here and have no idea of what is what," Azrea said shaking her head this time in frustration, and then continued as another question burdened her mind, "So if you are his brothers then Syrian is also a draconian?"
Azrea saw the twins roll their eyes, "Of course, didn’t you realize this sooner?"
"Well yes, but it seems so surreal because I haven’t seen him change yet," Azrea explained.
"Oh, that explains it," they said with what sounded like sarcasm.
Azrea stuck her tongue out playfully, "Yes, it makes perfect," this made all three of them smile, but Azrea’s smile was exchanged with a questioning look, "By the way I was wondering, why are you two here?"
The twins laughed at this, "You sure do wonder and question a lot," they said.
Azrea smiled, "Yes, I know this, but could you please answer?"
"You can’t tell Syrian this, but we are here because we are trying to protect him. See Damon, our older brother, has been scouting the area lately because he is trying to find Syrian for our father the king still wants him dead. Not only because of killing the queen, but also because he fears that Syrian, because he matured faster than the rest, will come back to kill other Draconians and get his revenge," The twins explained plainly.
"So does that mean that you believe Syrians innocent?" Azrea asked.
The twins shrugged their shoulders, "Well we don’t believe he is guilty of killing our mother," one of them said.
"But we aren’t saying he isn’t guilty," the other finished.
Azrea shook her head, "That doesn’t make any since. First you say you don’t believe he is guilty, but then you say you aren’t going to say that he isn’t guilty," Azrea said trying to understand their riddled words.
Again the twins shrugged their shoulders, "It is how you take it," they said then all of a sudden they grew quite. Azrea looked at them and could tell they were listening intently for something. Azrea grew aware of her surroundings, but couldn’t detect any noise that would alarm the twins.
"Sorry, but we must go," they said suddenly.
"What do you mean? What’s wrong?" Azrea asked perplexed.
"Well if we don’t then Syrian will be able to detect that we are here,"
"And that wouldn’t be good,"
"So we will see you later," they said, with that they jumped down from the tree and took off running into the forest. Azrea watched them go and only when they were out of sight did she climb down from the tree. With her mind spinning with all that they had told her, Azrea made her way to the cave, being careful to avoid the hole. Just as Azrea was enter the cave’s boundary she sensed something and turned around to look back outside. There disappearing behind a tree was a person. Azrea blinked as she recognized who it was for there was only one person she knew of that had three types of brown in his hair. Yet she couldn’t understand what Syrian would be doing out there. Shrugging her shoulders Azrea dismissed the problem, ‘he has as much right to be out there as I do,’ she thought and then continued down the tunnel.
Azrea thought about what the twins had told her and she was so enveloped in her thoughts that she jumped when he spoke, "What were you doing outside?" Syrian asked, and he did not sound happy. Azrea looked up to see she had gotten to the intersection, but she also saw Syrian leaning up against one of the walls and his face was just as angered as his voice had sounded.
"I was exploring," Azrea said shortly; for she didn’t want Syrian to know that she had been talking to the twins.
"Who were you with," Syrian demanded as he pushed off the wall to stalk closer to Azrea.
"What do you mean? I wasn’t with anyone," Azrea said calmly, but for some reason she had the feeling she wasn’t fooling him in the least.
"Bullshit," he snarled coming closer to Azrea, "I’m not stupid, you were with Phoenix and Fury weren’t you?!" Azrea was scared, but not scared of what Syrian would do to her. She was scared what he would do to the twins, "Why the hell were they here?" he demanded fiercely.
"Don’t hurt them, they were only here to meet me," Azrea exclaimed.
"I don’t give a fuck; you can have them as your friends if you really want. I don’t care if Damon catches you and kills you because it will be your own damn fault, but if I ever find out that you betrayed me in any way; then I can assure you that I will kill you," Syrian snarled, and if he could have hurt Azrea right then, she was sure he wouldn’t have hesitated to.
Shaken, Azrea watched as Syrian stalked to his room. She knew that he was just scared that she was going to hurt him, but even so the fierceness that he had shown scared her. At that moment Azrea was reminded that he was a draconian and that when the seven day protection was over, if he wanted, he would be able kill her as easily as she could cut through soft butter.

The twins explained, "Anyways, as we were saying Syrian was 697 years old, still a dragonet, when this happened.
