Chapter Seven:
Kayleigh:
Kayleigh's thoughts were racing, her heartbeat was fluttering at a rapid pace. What do I do? Should I try to wreck the car? I need to call for help!
She could not believe this was happening to her. As she sneaked a quick glance at Mr. Cox's face, she felt cold chills run down her spine. He looked so...evil. So angry.
"Why are you doing this?" Although she meant for her voice to come out confidently, it sounded more like a pitiful squeal.
Brad's knuckles almost turned white as he gripped the steering wheel even tighter. "Why don't you shut up," he snarled. "I'll explain it all when I'm ready."
Kayleigh fought to hold back tears, but she continued on. "So you're it? You're the person that wrecked our car, aren't you? The police told Levi they thought it wasn't an accident...I should have listened to him..."
"Levi," Brad said through gritted teeth, "is a worthless son of a bitch. He and that mother of his have completely ruined my life. I have no life at all, thanks to them. I could have had so much..."
Kayleigh was about to argue with him, to defend Levi, then decided against it. If she kept the conversation going, maybe she could slip her phone out of her pocket without being noticed...
"What do you mean? How did they ruin your life?"
Brad paused, almost as if deciding whether or not it was safe to continue this conversation with her. After a moment, he answered, "If that dumb whore hadn't gotten pregnant, I could have just left. Did you know that I was planning on breaking up with her? I had found another girl. She was ten times better than the pathetic woman I now call my wife, and we were happy. We were gonna do great things...and then Levi came along. I got tied down to help with the baby. That was the end of my life as I knew it."
Kayleigh was stunned, and her heart hurt for Levi and his mother. She couldn't imagine having to live with this man...
"I still don't see where I come in?" She ever so gently reached her right hand down into her pocket, and tugged at her phone.
"Oh Kayleigh," he sneered. The way he said her name made her cringe. "You're making him stronger. You're giving him confidence, and he doesn't deserve it. He's starting to stand up to me, to disrespect me...all because of you. I'm sick of it. We're gonna end it."
Kayleigh was stunned, and didn't know what to say. But she silently flipped her phone open and tried to send a text without looking at the phone and giving it all away.
And then it buzzed. Someone had just sent her a text, and she felt her heart plummet as Brad glared at her hand. Quicker than lightning, he snapped her wrist back, grabbed the phone, and threw it out of the window. "Nice try," he growled. "I'm watching you."
Silent tears streamed down Kayleigh's face as they pulled up to a seedy looking apartment in a run-down, sinister part of the inner city.
"Get out of the car. And don't bother trying to run, I'll catch you."
Levi:
Even walking up the steps to his front door, Levi was already filled with dread. He couldn't be more glad that work was over...but the thought of coming home just wasn't appealing.
Now that his dad was gone, there was no more yelling, no more ranting, and no more beating. That was definitely a good thing; but now he was left with his mother. She never knew what to say, and it was extremely awkward between them. He hated this because he knew it was his father's fault. He had simply broken her; she was nothing more than a shell of the woman she used to be.
"Mom, I'm home," Levi called out. And then under his breath, "Not that you care."
After a quick shower, Levi came back downstairs to find his mother sitting in the kitchen, thumbing through an old magazine. "Hi Levi," she said quietly, barely acknowledging the fact that he was there.
"Hey. Mom I'm going over to Kayleigh's, I'll be back late. So don't worry or anything, okay?" He could hear the sarcasm dripping from his last few words. He couldn't help it.
"Alright. Have fun." If his mother got the sarcasm, she didn't show it at all.
Levi walked back outside, thinking how pathetic his home life was. He spent more time at Kayleigh's than he ever did here. Home for him was basically a place to sleep, take a shower, and get clothes or money when needed.
He glanced down at his phone, and couldn't help feeling a little worried. He had sent Kayleigh a text about 30 minutes ago and she still hadn't responded. Telling himself he was just being paranoid, Levi decided to head on over to her house. She probably just misplaced her phone or something.
Kayleigh:
"I'll scream bloody murder as soon as you open up these car doors. You just wait."
Brad sneered at her. "Go ahead, sweetie. Scream your little lungs out. Look at this hell hole. Do you really think anyone's gonna care? This neighborhood is a piece of shit. People hear screaming, gunshots, cop cars every day...they just don't give a damn anymore. Here, the rule is mind your own business and you don't get killed. So go ahead. Scream."
Kayleigh was about to lose it. She honestly didn't know what to do. All she knew was that the last thing she wanted was for Brad to get her inside that apartment.
When he came around to her door, he roughly grabbed her arm and dragged her out. Fight. Now's your chance.
Gathering up her courage, Kayleigh slammed her elbow into Brad's stomach. His breath knocked out of him, and he groaned in pain. Kayleigh jerked out of his grip, and began to run.
The adrenaline pumping through her, she ran faster than she ever had before. And all the while, she heard his loud breath and angry curses right on her heels.
