Chapter One:

Levi:

"Kayleigh, can I come over. Please." Levi voiced the question as more of a desperate statement. He wiped the blood from under his nose as he waited for a response.

"Of course you can, Levi. Are you okay?" Kayleigh. Just hearing her voice and thinking about her calmed his nerves. Her long, wavy brown hair. Her dark blue eyes. That stunning smile. He loved her with all of his heart, no doubt about it.

"I will be," he answered. "I'm on my way." Hanging up the phone, he hurried to his truck and began the drive to her house, which was only ten minutes from his own.

Kayleigh:

Kayleigh put her phone in her pocket and went to wait outside on the porch for Levi to arrive. Tears threatened to spill down her cheeks as she thought of what could be wrong. All she knew was that it had to do with his father.

Levi's father had never really been a part of his life. He was basically nonexistant, with room in his life for only two loves: his job, and his beer. His entire day was spent with his first love, and the nighttime was set aside for the latter.

But the abuse? That was more recent. It had started when Levi was around fifteen years old, also around the time when his dad lost a chance for a huge business promotion, and had been going on for about five years now.

Levi was nineteen now; much taller and more muscular than his father. Kayleigh knew in her heart that he could crush his father if he put his all into it...but that wasn't Levi. He had one of the biggest, most sincere hearts Kayleigh had ever known. And despite the fact that his dad was a good-for-nothing scumbag, Levi still loved him.

The only time he ever fought back was when he just couldn't take it anymore, when his father pushed him too far, and even then he never did any real damage. Judging by the sound of his voice, tonight was one of those nights.

Kayleigh shivered as she sat on the top step of her porch, and zipped up her fleece jacket. Despite the warm March afternoons, the nights still got a little chilly.

Just then, Levi's truck pulled into her driveway. Even though she knew he was hurting, she couldn't help but smile as he stepped out of the car and into her line of sight. From his tousled brown hair and serious brown eyes, to his muscular arms that enveloped her in the biggest bear hugs, he was perfect in her eyes. She was crazy in love with the boy.

Her smile faltered, however, when she saw his nose. A purple bruise was already forming, and blood trickled out. "Levi!" Her voice came out louder than she expected it to; she hoped she hadn't woken up any of the neighbors. "What happened?"

She rushed over to him and pulled him close to her. She felt his muscles quivering with tension and anger. "What happened?" He asked bitterly, pulling back and looking down into her eyes. She felt her knees go weak. "The same thing that happens every single damn time. My dad chugged way too many beers, and decided to take out his anger over his shitty job and shitty marriage on me. The end."

Kayleigh felt her throat tighten. She was so angry for him. It was so upsetting to see him like this. "I'm sorry, Levi," she whispered. "Listen, my parents are already asleep, but I'm gonna run inside and get you a wet washcloth. I'll be right back."

Levi:

He watched her scurry into the house and mentally kicked himself. What kind of boyfriend was he, always upsetting her and making her take care of him? But God, was he thankful for her. He honestly didn't know what he would do without her to turn to; she was the only real reason he had for living.

She came back outside, handed him the wet washcloth, and gently rubbed his back with her other hand. He felt his pulse quicken; she could do that to him with just a single touch. She affected him like no one ever had before, and like no one ever would. "Thanks," he mumbled as he dabbed at the blood.

After he cleaned up, Kayleigh suggested they go for a drive. "That way, we can talk," she explained, "and you can unwind. It's late, so there won't be much traffic. Maybe we can stop at the park." She grinned and winked at him as she pulled out her car keys. The park was the first place they had ever kissed, and since then had become a usual spot for them when they wanted to get away from everyone.

"Sounds good," he replied, and he couldn't help but smile. She was straight sexy. No other word for it. Maybe this night wouldn't be so bad after all.

Before she got into the car, Levi grabbed her wrist and pulled her close to him once more. She looked up at him and he felt her breath on his cheek. His heartbeat quickened. He leaned in and kissed her, gently at first. As she kissed him back, his head spun and his senses went wild. He kissed her with all his might, leaning into her until she backed up against the car.

Finally, she pulled away, breathless and smiling that amazing smile that he loved. "Levi, we have to stop," she said, laughing. "You know I have nosey neighbors. I swear they should work for the FBI. So, let's take it somewhere more private."

He couldn't help but laugh as well. "Fine, fine." He pretended to be mad as he got into the car.

As they drove, Levi watched her. He could see the wheels turning in her mind, and knew she was thinking deeply about something. "What's on your mind?"

"You," she responded quietly. "Levi, are you okay? Really?"

He smiled gently. "I am, now that I'm with you. Honestly. I just really needed to get away. Plus...I uh...I punched him back tonight. He's not gonna want to see me for a good while."

"Is your nose okay?"

He laughed. "Kayleigh, me and my nose are gonna be just fine baby. But seriously...thank you so much for always being here for me. I don't know what I would do without you."

She shifted her eyes to him for a quick second and smiled shyly. He loved it when she randomly got all shy like that. "You don't need to thank me Levi. I love you and will always be here for you. Do you understand me, Levi Cox? I love you with all my heart."

The words lifted his heart. "Kayleigh McBride, I--" But he never finished what he was about to say. The headlights caught his attention at that moment. They seemed to come out of nowhere...and they were headed straight for the driver's side.

"Kayleigh, look out!" He yelled frantically, not knowing what to do. It was all happening so fast. Kayleigh looked out her window, saw the car flying towards them, and screamed.

The rest was a blur. Levi felt the impact as the stranger's car plowed into their own...right into the driver's side...right into Kayleigh. They were spinning out of control, and suddenly slammed into a telephone pole. Levi's head hit the window...a sharp pain in his side...he felt the blood dripping down the back of his head...and then his world went black.
