The Surprise
Another Smith Mystery, this time involving the Bomb Squad.
"Sir, this is Agent Olivia calling for backup, Code Red. There's only one hour left before the bombs will explode. The bomb squad is on standby at the Centre Point Hospital where the threat was located and we have already evacuated everyone." The sense of urgency in her voice is immense, "Supposedly the threat came in a delivered parcel. It contains a piece of paper from an anonymous source, stating a clue to the whereabouts of the bombs. The perpetrator did not give any indication why he or she is attacking, but pointed out that there are three bombs. They are scattered at different locations within the building, the first letter of their locations spell the word CAB, and their locations forms an equilateral triangle. Sir, the building contains six floors, each with at least fifteen rooms, there is no way we can get through it in time if we don't have back up!"
Smith sat back on his comfy chair and pondered for a good five minutes about this situation.
"Sir? Sir?!" Olivia's voice at the other end of the phone sounds extremely anxious and somewhat desperate, but knowing her superior is still on line, she waited with impatience.
"Can you send me a labeled floor plan of the hospital? I have a general idea of where the bombs are located."
"Yes Sir. I will do that right away. Sir, please send back up just in case?" Olivia pleaded.
"Ah, yes. I'll send Patrick's team over to maintain crowd control. I'll solve the puzzle in half an hour."
"But..."before she could argue, Smith hung up, after a satisfied grunt for the arrival of the hospital's floor plan by fax.
"Now let's see. There are an abundance of rooms starting with the letter B...bathrooms, balcony, bakery...wow, what a fancy hospital...backyard, beams...way too many to narrow down. There aren't many locations starting with the letter A though...in fact, I don't see any with the letter A. How is that possible? A.....A.....obviously this one likes puzzles and word games. Funny, he is quite like my grandfather. Granddad used to play crosswords in the grand room, his atrium word heaven he called it. What jolly times I had passed with him..." Suddenly, his eyes light up. "Atrium! That's it! The Grand room on the left side of the third floor is one of the locations."
With excitement he dialed Agent Olivia's phone. It was only one ring and Olivia picked up, "Yes Sir! You have good news?"
"Indeed I do, check the Grand room on the left side of the first floor, there should be a bomb located in there somewhere. How are the patients?"
"Doing fine, Patrick's team is great help." Olivia's hurrying footsteps can be heard. "Wait a second, I think we found something...BINGO! It is a bomb."
"Good, I'll get back to working." Sensing excitement and happiness in Olivia's voice gave Smith a sense of accomplishment. "I can do this." He whispered to himself.
To be continued.
