The Sony Ericsson W710i Mobile Phone - Martin's Quick Review
The Sony Ericsson W710i moves mobile phones into a new category - mobile phones as exercise equipment. We put it through its paces.
The fitness applications allow you to measure the distance you've traveled and how fast you are going, as well as counting how many steps you take. Whilst some sports enthusiasts would wish that the phone could do more, it's basically a phone for runners, joggers and brisk walkers, and doesn't really do much else for practitioners of other sports. Other consumers have suggested incorporating a GPS antenna so as to accurately measure the exact distance you've run, although not a lot of joggers seem to value this function. They do love the W710i's pedometer, which is adjustable to the length of your strides. The pedometer automatically resets itself at midnight and saves the data of your strides for the day, so that you may retrieve the info easily.
The phone also comes with a calorie counter and software that measures how much calories you have burned, setting your calculated strides against your own inputting of your height, weight, gender and the year you were born. This does not only help you with your exercise regimen but with your diet as well. Its sporty design bespeaks its function; after all, wouldn't it be strange to have a metallic, boxy business phone strapped onto your arm whilst you jog? It comes with a strap for the arm and a belt clip, and the pedometer only works if these are engaged. The W710i is a clamshell phone, and not exactly thin at 25 mm when closed, but still lightweight and compact. There are two buttons each on both sides of the phone, so that you could manipulate the phone without opening it up, quite helpful when you use it while jogging.
The Sony Ericsson W710i is a Walkman phone, which is understandable as it is the Walkman phones that have inspired a sporty phone to accompany you when you jog. Its internal memory can store up to 10 MB of music, and you can insert a memory card for more storage. The phone actually comes with a 512 MB card, but you can later purchase other sizes if you wish.
The W710i also has a camera, but it is not exceptionally good, with the phone being more a Walkman phone than a camera phone. Also, photos and videos are not optimally enjoyable on the W710i's tiny 30 x 37 mm inside screen. Still, it's got more good features than lemons, and the GPRS allows the software-laden phone to use the applications smoothly. Many customers have called this the best phone ever – from a jogger's point of view. Given that, you can say the Sony Ericsson W710i has achieved the desired effect.
