The Sony Ericsson Aino - A Mobile PS3?

Of all the mobile phone makers in the industry, Sony stands to gain a lot giving users some form of cross-platform access that would allow its various products in the computing, entertainment, gaming and communications markets to link-up and sync. That may have been the design impetus for Sony Ericsson to beef up its portfolio with the new Sony Ericsson Aino – its first mobile phone handset to offer wireless sync with Sony’s PS3 gaming console.

A PSP Phone?

There has been speculation on the net about updates on the dying PSP to enable it to provide some communication functions. But it seems Sony will just let the PSP die the natural death any product faces in its life cycle. The Aino is the PSP long awaited by its fans. With Sony’s proprietary Remote Play feature, Aino users can have remote tethering to their PS3 consoles at home from anywhere in the world via its high speed internet connectivity. You can then stream audio and video files from the PS3 hard drive and enjoy them on your Aino while on the road. We assume the PS3 is turned on while you’re out of the house.

Unfortunately, it’s not a complete tether. You won’t be able to play your PS3 games on the Sony Ericsson Aino which is what PSP fans have been speculating about. Nice try. The company has to release a full-featured PSP mobile phone. But if it’s any indication, the Aino proves it can be done.

What Else is New?

Can we foresee any similar sync facility with its Vaio desktop entertainment PCs? Well, the Aino has the MediaGo features that is similar and enables wireless sync with any desktop or laptop PC, not just a Vaio. This allows you to access and sync your Aino with the media contents while charging the phone.

The Sony Ericsson Aino won’t be outstanding with just these features. It’s part of the Communications Entertainment genre of mobile gadgets that Sony Ericsson hopes to create with handsets like this and the Satio. An impressive 8.1 megapixel camera makes it among the best imaging handsets out there. The snapper comes with autofocus and touchfocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, face and smile detection, image stabilizer, smart contrast and red-eye reduction. And since it’s a 3G phone, you get a secondary VGA camera at the front for video calls. There’s assisted GPS and Bluetooth with A2DP support. Take note that it’s also the first Sony Ericsson phone to get rid of its proprietary M2 expansion slots in favour of the more universal microSD.

When will Aino be released?

Sony Ericsson has announced that the Aino will be released during the last quarter of the year. It is expected that the first Aino will arrive in the UK markets early October while the rest of Europe will follow. Price is still not advised.
