The Smart Shopper: Buying a Coffee Grinder

Helping you find the perfect coffee grinder.
For all those coffee aficionados grinding coffee can be one of the toughest things to do. It can get messy, and you do not always know how fine or coarse to grind the beans. All this has to do with what type of grinder you have and what suits you best for what type of coffee you enjoy and how often you drink coffee.

There are three types of coffee grinders. There is the burr coffee grinder, blade coffee grinder, and the manual coffee grinder. Each serves a different purpose and some are easier to use than others.

The burr coffee grinder is probably the most expensive form of coffee grinder, but it also produces the best results. It operates at much lower speeds and therefore less heat is omitted. Heat is what causes the beans to lose flavor and freshness during brewing.

Blade coffee grinders are probably the most popular form of household grinder. They are fairly inexpensive and easy to use. There is some downside to having a blade grinder. Since it uses blades that needed to be in a moving motion to grind the beans a good bit of friction is produced, which causes heat. The heat from the grinder can cause the grinds to lose taste and sour easier.

An alternative to both the burr and blade grinder is the manual grinder. The manual grinder is going to take a little bit of man power to use and will take longer to grind the beans. However, with this style of grinder it does not produce much friction in the grinding process, and keeps the beans and grinds fresh.

This is a fairly simple comparison of all the different types of grinders on the market. There are plenty of brands out there that will carry a variety of grinders ranging in style and price. Take your time looking around and find a grinder that fits your drinking habits and your budget.
