The Secret to Having a Healthy Self-Esteem

Our quality of life is directly affected by our self-esteem. The secret to having a healthy self-esteem is changing the way you think.
Are you satisfied with your life? If not, it could be a result of a low self-esteem. Feeling inadequate or admiring other people so much to the point that you look down on yourself can ruin your quality of life. Developing your self-esteem is a major step that you can take to feel better about every aspect of your life. The journey to a healthy self-esteem begins with changing the way you think.

What do you think about yourself?

Simply put, self-esteem is what you think about who you are and what you do. Some people find it difficult to love themselves and appreciate the value of who they are. They compare themselves to others constantly, wishing that they could be more like them. Individuals with a low self-esteem lack the confidence to go after the things that they truly want out of life. Does this sound like you?

The Effects of Low Self-Esteem

Negative thinking towards yourself can actually limit your potential. If you are unhappy with your career, it could be because deep down, you don't believe that you can do any better. It takes confidence to work hard, because you have to believe that your hard work will pay off. Making a career change requires boldness, because you need to be sure that your skills and experience will help you make the transition. People who have the talent that they need for a promotion within their company often forfeit the opportunity because they fail to see the potential within themselves.

Your level of satisfaction in life is dependent upon the image that you have of yourself. A low self-esteem can cause you to settle for less than you deserve. Dreams and desires are compromised with regards to relationships, finances, and physical appearance in addition to career. Sometimes individuals will latch on to abusers or to the first person they can find because they feel that they don't deserve more. Others settle for barely making ends meet because they don't believe they can succeed in a more profitable industry. Beautiful people hide themselves in oversized clothes because they think that they are ugly.

The results of having a low self-esteem can be monumental. Having a negative image of yourself can deprive you of happiness, fulfilling relationships, and financial security. Don't settle for less than you deserve.

How to develop a Healthy Self-Esteem?

A healthy self-esteem consists of positive thinking about who you are and what you do. People with a healthy self-esteem can appreciate the positive aspects of others without feeling jealous. If you are confident that you are good at certain things, and that you have the potential to be an even better person, then your self-esteem is probably healthy. If not, here are some things that you can do to improve your self-esteem.

Write down what you are good at: Everyone has some skill, talent, experience, or knowledge that they can be proud of. Put everything that you can think of down on paper and look at it. Acknowledge that you have something of value to offer the world.

Get a makeover: If you have trouble appreciating you appearance, or if you simply never put in the time to look your best, make some changes. A new haircut and clothing that highlights your positive features can help you to look better and feel more confident. (This is not just a tip for women!)

Avoid comparing yourself to others: There will always be someone better and someone worse. Who really cares? Focus on being yourself, because you were created to be you and not them. Trying to be someone that you are not will only lead to frustration. Learn your potential, but also know your limits.

Treat yourself with respect: You deserve kindness and appreciation. Give yourself the same love and care that you offer to others. You will find that the better you feel about yourself, the more you will have to give to those around you.

A healthy self-esteem will help you enjoy life more. Work on loving yourself, and evolving into a better form of you. It will change your life and affect the people around you. Strive to maintain a healthy self-esteem, and you will be glad that you did.
