The Secert Alliance: Chapter One
Everyone knows how High School works: The jocks, the pretties, the geeks, and the norms. Only a select few students know about the Secret Alliance: A group of students from all cliques and some staff especially trained in courses not taught in school. What they fight and protect... Well you have to read to find out.
"Jamie? Jamie!" someone yelled breaking me out of my thoughts. Glancing sideways, Akilah was looking at me with an annoyed expression on her face. " What?" I asked.
Sighing she said, " I was trying to tell you something, but you were SO lost in thought, that I thought you died and your body was just sitting there. waiting to be buried. "
I had to hold off a giggle. Akilah had the wildest imagination and the most interesting ways off expressing herself. She reminded me of a curios kitten who was clever enough not to get caught by the milk. " I'm sorry. I'm a little off today. Just tired, but that doesn't mean that I have to neglect good friends. So what's up?" I said trying to get the tiny frown off her face.
And it worked. The corners off her mouth started to twitch. " The sky is up, the ground is down, and if you try to look at both at once, you'll look like a clown." She replied.
"No, it's more like you’re a Perry dog having a stroke." I said, trying not to think at how bad my attempt at humor was.
"Very funny. But it didn't rhyme with down." She finished saying, just before the finally bell rang, indicating school was out. We walked out of study hall and straight into a fight. Two boys were wrestling in the main hallway. I was surprised that the teachers hadn’t broken it up minutes ago! Akilah and I looked at each other and nodded.
Stepping closer I got one of the guys arms and pulled. He stumbled, but regained quickly throwing a punch in my direction hitting me square on the shoulder. Absorbing the hit, I swiftly twisted his arm behind his back. He let out a hiss of pain and I had to work hard to hold down a smirk. I wasn’t even twisting that hard.
Looking over at Akilah, she had the other guy in a head lock. Principal Huffman, Bobert for those more familiar to him, push past the crowd. Seeing, us there he smiled. " Akilah, Jamie. It’s so glad to see you! If you would be so kind as to take your bundles to my offices?" He asked with false cheer.
We accepted and told the boys to move it. They listen to us after they got over their bruised egos. We toke care of that with a little more twists, hits and kicks. While we were leaving, teasing came form behind us. I guess their friends got a kick out of watching their buddies being beaten by two girls. As the noise of the crowd began to fade away us, Boberts face turned into a scowl.
We entered the office and Patty, the secretary, jumped up when she saw us. "Mr. Huffman, You have some urgent calls to make and the staff meeting is going to commence in 30 minutes," she informed us. Bobert nodded and said, " Thank-you Patty. I’ll get right on it after I deal with these trouble makers," and disappeared into his private offices.
Akilah and I followed. Dumping the boys in the office chairs we turned to leave. " Oh, Ladies. Wait here. I need to speak with you both." Mr. Huffman said.
Opening my mouth up to protest he said " No arguing. I will provide another mean of transport. Don’t worry about the buses."
Akliah nodded and dragged me out of the office before I could protest any farther. Patty got up to greet us. She gave us both a hug and said " It’s been a busy day. Three fights, skippers, and druggies. Mr. Huffman’s patience is wearing thin. I wouldn’t fight with him if I were you."
She looked over to me. " What? Since I’m the feisty one you automatically think I’m the one who’s going to fight." I said.
Akliah gave me a funny look, knowing that was just what I was going to do before she pulled me out o the office. Patty just laughed. " I know you well enough, Jamie, to know that’s one of the things you do best." She said and gave a low chuckle.
"Well, she does know how to make a convincing argument without telling a lie. I remember when she was arguing with the lunch lady. She said Candy Corn was a vegetable because it had the word "corn" in it and the lunch lady countered with an I don’t." Akilah giggled and sighed, then whispered, " Good times, good times."
I let out a snort recalling that memory. The phone rang, breaking us from our chat. Patty said " Well girls, I better get back to work. I’ll see you guys at practice." And she ambled over to her desk, flipping her black hair over her slender shoulders.
Akilah and I let out groans. Patty was going to enjoy pulverizing us with her bamboo stick. Hopefully, she will come down with the flu and have to stay at home, missing practice. But for now we waited for Bobert to be down with his charges.
