Chapter 4

Cassandra
We hadn't even finished eating when I got the call. You would think that things happen more conveniently, that people only get kidnapped when nothing is going on in their or their loved ones lives. Unfortunately, this isn't the case. Sure, Rachael was kind of annoying and bossy, but we all loved her. It didn't seem fair for her, of all people, to get kidnapped when she was so close to getting what she wanted out of life. And even though I knew that she was my competition, she was still my friend, and I needed to help her out.

Now, I'd seen enough detective shows and movies to know that while there might be clues, no way in hell was I finding them, so my best bet was to track her cell phone. I knew that a few months ago, Rachael had gotten freaked out because this guy was following her. It turned out to be her uncle or something, but with the scare of it, she had gotten a cell phone tracking device so that people could find her if she went missing. I don't think that she ever even thought of taking it off her phone, so if she remained as thoughtless as she always had been, we were safe.

One of the setbacks of being a pageant girl is the fact that when you're good, people get jealous, and some pageant girls-and their mom's can be even worse-will do whatever it takes to bring home the crown, including making some of their competition "disappear" until after the pageant. It's happened to everybody, but somehow it seemed more annoying than scary this time. This is the Miss California pageant, it's getting up to a national level, so grow up and realize that if you aren't the best then so be it! Plus, I'm sure the Miss America judges love to hear that you successfully kidnapped and prevented a top competitor in order to get where you are today. And I'm positive that the first thing the Miss Universe pageant judges ask is, "Have you ever prevented something from happening by making that something "disappear" for a few days?" Yeah, great quality.

Despite my irritation on the subject, I whipped out my shiny cell, and quickly dialed the cell phone tracking agency. The woman who answered was nasally, annoying, and seemed about as happy as I was. "Look, we can track your friend, but I'm going to need the zip code. There's no way that I'm going to let a stranger track her down!" the lady argued. Great, so not only was my friend kidnapped, but she was idiotic enough to not tell anyone the number that turns on the service, therefore, no tracking for us. This seems unfair, because I've been living with her for almost five years now. I was the farthest thing from a stranger, yet I couldn't prove it. Time for plan B.

"Hey Joel, do you mind if we take a slight detour?" I asked quickly, hoping for a yes, so we could go find Trish. He smiled and nodded. I hadn't noticed before, but he had a really nice smile. It seemed kind of familiar, but anyone could have a warm, inviting smile that made you feel safe. I kind of wanted to ask if we knew each other, but if we didn't then I might sound like I was hitting on him or something and I didn't want that. I only wanted to be friends with this strange, kind man.

Even so, he was the least of my troubles at the moment. I mean, while it isn't uncommon to have a pageant girl kidnapped, I was seriously concerned for Rachael. I wanted to find her, and make sure that she could still go after her dream, even though only one of us could completely achieve this goal. Trish was waiting anxiously on the beach, crying her eyes out and begging anyone who would listen to help her look for Rachael. Admittedly, it looked pathetic, and mostly single men where the ones helping her search.

When Joel and I walked up, she glanced up and came rushing towards us, slightly confused due to the man next to me. "Who this? He took her didn't he? You bastard!" she shrieked. No one even looked up leaving me with the impression that she had been a nuisance for the past few hours. Joel simply smiled as I explained to her how we had meet and that he would be joining us until after the pageant. "So is he your boyfriend? Finally! I was kinda getting worried that you gave up!" This got a chuckle out of all of us, but Joel looked kind of upset. He was probably just worried that we would never get to his unknown destination.

As the three of us made our way to my car, we heard a noise that would change the rest of our lives forever. A single scream, as quiet and timid as any scream could be, rang out into the open air for only a select few to hear. It was the scream of someone in pain.
