The Rise
This is the first of a little series. It is kind of a spin off of the movie Push. Comments much appreciated.
Out of the ordinary, different, and crazy seem to be the main three words that have always summed up my life. But for your sake and mine I will start from the beginning, or from the start of what I can remember. Oh, and you can just call me Rayne Presley.
I was born in the Montana Mountains and then my memory skips about everything till the point I was about seven years old. We were still in those mountains, and I must say that those were some of the best memories of my life. Everything up there was always so beautiful. I digress; I wasn’t ever able to leave the house. My father always said that it was for my safety. He told me that when I was older and really understood everything that she the time would come and we would change the course of our kind’s history forever.
Slowly but surely my dad started teaching me about what we are, and what I am. My father, Heath, was a mover and a watcher. My mother, who I really don’t know that much about since she died just minutes after I was born, was a shadower and a pusher. Your probably are wondering where that leaves me. Not only did I inherit all of their powers, but I pretty much got every power there is available. I didn’t ask for this, I didn’t want this, but I have it and now I have to make the best of it.
There are people who are using their power for good, and the other for evil, killing or making the others conform to their side. I guess I am the one who is supposed to restore order and bring peace to our kind. I guess I am willing to do it but who knows. The only problem is my eyes have no irises, or maybe my iris is black either way it looks unnatural.
Now I am 18 and my dad says its time, my powers are at full range and are stronger than anyone ever.
"Rayne, wipe my memory of you now. Then go hide in the bathroom and shadow yourself. Remember focus in on shadowing."
"I know, I know." I fill the tears spilling onto my checks.
"Everything will be ok; you are the answer everyone has been waiting for." I nod and watch as I erase more than half of his memory. I then sprint to the bathroom while shadowing myself. I hear our front door burst open.
"Heath, how you doing?" One voice asks. There are three men in their, and a woman. Leaders of the dark side. "We come to ask you to join our brotherhood." Let’s see there are a sniffer, watcher, pusher, and a mover. All pretty well developed, still no match for me. Still, they can’t know I exist yet; I need to stay a rumor, a myth till the time is right.
"Never." My father’s voice croaked. Then bam, shotgun exploded and I know he is dead.
"What a shame that seems to be just a myth. Search the house to be sure." I hear foot steps disperse in the house. I lay down in the bathtub as the sniffer and watcher examine the house. Someone’s in the bathroom, the grab the shower curtain and sniff. They exit.
"Its clear, something isn’t right though."
"Why would he hide someone that could have easily killed us?"
"That’s a good point Jeremiah." The female voice rang, "However, if she is real it isn’t the right time now for her to reveal herself." With that said they left. I still lying in the bathtub curled up in a ball. I was about to face the most powerful people ever. I go to my room and start packing my things. In my jacket that I always wear there was a note sealed. I opened it to see it was from my dad.
Rayne,
The time has come. I am sorry that it had to start off like this but it leads to a better future and more lives spared this way. Pack your things, which I am sure you already have, and go to Los Angles, California and track down a woman who goes by the name of Dahlia. In hear is her scent which you can use to track her down. I know that part won’t be hard for you, however it will get difficult so be ready and always clean up your messes. You know what I mean. I have faith and your mother and I will be watching over you. Be careful. One last thing Dahlia has one more note for you from me contain a list of names that must be taken care of or dealt with.
Love,
Dad
At least now I now know where I was headed. I quickly sniffed the paper as images of L.A and Chinatown rushed through my head. I grab my things, and to the freezer to grab the five grand in their and I was off to the air port.
