The Recommended Auto Insurance Coverage for Your Teen Driver

If your teen has recently acquired their driver's license you will likely need more insurance. The recommended auto insurance coverage for teen drivers varies for each state, but there are some guidelines in determining what your rates will be.

Each year there are millions of teen drivers on the roads and with each one will come an acceptable amount of risk. Making sure that your teen driver is adequately covered will be very important to you.

Most teen drivers are considered to be high risk, and the rates to cover these teens will be higher due to their inexperience and lack of maturity. However, there are several things you and your teen can do to curb the cost of your premiums.

Take drivers education - Any teen that has taken and completed a driver's ed course will save their parents hundreds of dollars a year in premiums. The student will be considered a safer driver due to their training status.

GPA - A student's grade point average will have a big impact on getting a discount with your auto insurance company. They will consider your teen to be responsible since they are able to maintain a higher GPA.

Teens with cars - It may seem nice to buy your new driver their own car, but by doing this you will actually be increasing your chances of having high insurance premiums.

Good driver - If your teen sustains a good driving record in their first year of driving then it is likely that your premiums will decrease.

Deductible - When choosing your coverage, having a higher deductible will end up saving you money on your premiums. It is a thought to consider and you may wish to discuss it with your agent.

Teen drivers are everywhere, and they often get a bad name with insurance companies. The important thing is that your teen will need to prove themselves responsible in order for you to get decent premiums. Sit down and discuss their responsibilities before they ever get behind the wheel. Helping them to understand the recommended auto insurance coverage and the factors affecting it will make them better drivers.
