Edric hated waking up early. He loved his sleep, but he couldn’t afford to be unalert. An attack could come at any time from anywhere.

Edric, a young, tall and skinny lad was being chased. He had the void; the essence of magic is contained in the void. Most people could sense the essence inside them, but only a select few can ever use it.
Edric knew he had a quite powerful link to the essence in him, otherwise the reapers wouldn’t be chasing him, but magic was nothing but a complete mystery to him.

Only the richest people in the land could afford the teachings of a mage, a person who could control his link to the essence and use magic. Without the training of a mage, no one could use magic.

Edric is a orphan and has been alone without friends for most of his life, he has been moved from holding to holding, monastery to monastery, and now he was running.

Reapers wanted him, they are evil abominations, fearfully strong, fast and nearly impossible to kill using conventional weaponry, that feed of the void in humans: draining their essence. Humans whose essence has been drain did not die, but suffered a fate worse than death; the walk around soulless, not responding to anything or anyone, just wandering. The are know as being cursed. The reaper’s curse: no cure was known, no way to return them to normal. The cursed eventually stop, collapsing just where they are, lying there until they stop completely.

As Edric lay in a haystack of an unknown farmer’s barn, the sun silently came up." I’ve already been here too long", he thought, as the farm animals greeted the new day.

Standing up and preparing to sneak out, he heard the barn door open up. Quickly darting out of sight, he observed the farmer coming in. The farmer started shifting hay into an empty cart.

"Pappa, Pappa!" a little boy screamed, as he ran into the barn. "Yes, my son?" the farmer replied.
"Were going to the woods!"." Now-now calm down little brother", said a stocky lad about 17 from the barn door. "Father, were going hunting", the lad said to the farmer. "Just remember to stay away from the ridge" the farmer warned. "Why papa?", the innocent little boy asked. "Because there are dangerous things there, not even the reapers dare go there." "All right papa, we wont". "Well happy hunting my sons", the farmer sent them off with a blessing.

Silently biding his time, Edric thought that he couldn’t be sitting this still for so long. "Damn you farmer hurry up!"

Finally escaping unobserved, Edric started making his way to the woods.

Quietly stalking a dirty gray mountain hare, Edric worked out it’ll be best to grab the hare from the right side. Moving into position he was very careful to not make a sound. Just as Edric was ready to pounce the hare jumped and ran away. "DAMN! Now I have to eat something else." Edric though.

Suddenly Edric heard what scared the hare: a disgusting ragged rasping sound, like someone drowning in a rusted tin can, It was reapers and they were close!
