The Raccoon

I love this animal!
I was walking along through a wood,
When all at once I stopped and stood
I saw an animal near a tree
A nimble, cunning fellow was he.
A dark black mask covered his face,
A robber? A raccoon? An interesting case..
For this is the animal that sometimes goes through
People’s dustbins the aim being to
Take and steal as much as he can find
-Yuck moldy cheese – mmm bacon rind!-
These people do not like animals that steal,
But what can you do, he replies, if you want a meal?
Fruit and fish is all very right
But I’d more rather go bin-hunting at night
For humans treat themselves to food galore,
So surely there is enough for all of us to store!
The raccoon I am watching is now looking at me..
Then running into the distance where I can no longer see..
A flash of a striped tail is all that remains
A raccoon? A robber but not in chains
For this is an animal with a spirit which is free
I’m glad I feel honored that he showed himself to me!
