Chapter One
"Don’t worry Aunt Maci," the girl said smiling. Her long black hair covered the sword on her back. "I’ll be fine."
"What do you mean that you’ll be fine," she cried hugging her tightly. "You’re a girl Angel, what if you get hurt!"
Angel sighed and hugged her aunt back. "I’ll be fine," she said. "It’s the same school that Vincent went to, so don’t worry." The train whistled. Angel gave a quick kiss and smiled. "I’ll see you later mama."
She ran to the train and jumped on. She sighed and sat down in an empty compartment. Rolnard’s Questing School, she thought looking out the window. It was supposed to be the best school in the world.
"Can I sit here?" a voice asked. Angel looked up at a blond girl, all dressed in black. She nodded and the girl sat down in front of her. She was holding something that looked like a bat, but with one huge eye.
"I’m Angel Crescent," Angel said smiling.
"Roselyn Black," the girl said. "But you can call me Rose. What’s your specialty?"
"Swordsmanship I think," Angel said. "I never tried any magic, so I’m not really sure on that."
Rose gave a small nod. "I practice black magic," she said very quietly and hesitantly.
"Wow, I’ve never met a Dark Magician before," Angel said. "In my home town all we have are healers."
Rose looked up. "You don’t mind if I use dark magic?" she asked.
Angel smiled and shook her head. "Why would I? It’s the magic that you like and use best."
Rose smiled. "Are you always this cheerful?"
Angel grinned and nodded. "See if I smile, then everyone around me smiles back!"
Rose laughed. "You are weird," she said. She held up the bat. "This is Grith. He’s a Seer Bat."
"I wish I had a pet," Angel said holding out her hand to Grith. He flew and landed on her hand. Angel smiled. "He’s cute in his own way."
"My sister gave him to me before leaving for this school," Rose said as Grith flew back to her.
"No fair," Angel said pouting. "The only thing that Vincent gave me was his old sword."
Rose giggled and they both started laughing. The door slammed open and a gang of older boys stormed in. Angel didn’t like the looks of them.
"Look’s like a couple of first years," the blond boy said. He turned to Grith. "What the hell is that?"
"Look’s like a mutant bat," his friends said laughing.
Rose held Grith tightly and Angel stood up. "Do you need something from us?" she asked.
"You don’t speak to your seniors that way little girl," the blond boy said. He noticed the sword on her back. "So you’re a swordswoman, think you can beat me?"
Angel tossed her hair back and glared at him. "Want to try?"
He stared at her cold eyes for a moment and snorted. "Who’d want to fight with a scrawny girl like you," he said. "Let’s leave."
Angel slammed the door shut after them and stormed back to her seat. "People like him make me so mad!"
Rose smiled. "Thank you," she said. She hesitated and then held out her hand. "Friends?"
Angel took her hand and grinned. "Of course!"
The train stopped and they gathered their things. "We’re actually here," Angel exclaimed looking at the town. "I wonder if Vincent is here. He said that he’d pick me up."
"Your brother?" Rose asked. "What does he look like?"
"Really tall, blond hair, and same blue eyes as me," Angel told her. "And he’s a stupid idiot, who can’t get a girlfriend."
A hand smacked her head. "Who’s the stupid idiot who can’t get a girlfriend?"
Angel turned and saw her brother crossing his arms. She leapt and punched him in the face. "That’s for hitting me," she said. She smiled at Rose’s surprised face. "Don’t worry, we do this all the time."
Vincent stared at Rose. "Do you have an older sister named Karen?" he asked. When Rose nodded he smiled. "She’s in my team."
"Is she here now?" Angel asked.
Vincent shook his head. "No, she forgot to do her assignment that was due today."
Rose sighed. "That’s Karen."
Angel laughed and turned to Vincent. "Are you going to drop us off at the school?"
Vincent gave a nervous smile. "About that, I can’t," he said. Angel glared at him. "Not my fault. A quest came up and I have to take it. Karen’s going to teleport later to join me."
Angel sighed. "Guess it can’t be helped," she said. She turned to Rose. "Let’s leave the idiot and go find the school."
"I’ll see if I can find you later," Vincent said running away.
"You and your brother are close," Rose said. They were dragging their suitcases down the road.
"Really?" Angel asked. "We’re always fighting."
Rose smiled and turned to Grith. "Can you fly into the air and find the school?" she asked. Grith made a small squeak and flew up high. He came back down and landed on Rose’s shoulder. She sighed and turned to Angel. "He has no idea."
"Then we’ll do it the old fashioned way," Angel said letting go of her suitcase. She walked up to the nearest person and asked for directions. She nodded and walked back to Rose. "We have to go straight and take a right at a fountain. The guy said that it was about an hour from here by cart."
Rose stared at the suitcases. "Walking would be too much," she said. She stopped an empty carriage and motioned Angel to come with the baggage and smiled. "We’ll go by carriage."
Angel frowned. "Isn’t that going to be too much money?" she asked.
"Don’t worry about it. My parents give me a decent allowance," Rose said as the man loaded the bags inside. Angel sighed and followed Rose in. They looked outside the windows at the large town. The carriage finally stopped and Rose paid the man.
"I feel bad about you paying," Angel said as the man drove off.
Rose smiled. "Don’t worry about it," she said. They both stared at the large school. "Ready to go in?"
"Of course," Angel said getting her bags and going inside. Rose smiled and followed her in. The place was enormous. There was a forest on one end, a garden on another. The dorms they could see were close to the school. And the school was the most elegant building there was. A woman was waiting. She smiled as they came forward.
"You must be Roselyn Black and Evangeline Crescent," she said. "My name is Lorena Curry. I’m your Headmistress and Professor here." She smiled. "It must be fate, because the two of you are in the same dorm."
"Really!" Angel said smiling. She turned to Rose. "This is great!"
Professor Curry smiled. "I’m guessing that you and Miss Black are already good friends."
Angel nodded as Rose blushed. "We’re best friends," she said.
"Does Miss Black feel this way too?" Professor Curry asked.
Rose blushed. "I’ll do anything for Angel," she said quietly. "She’s the first person to become my friend."
Angel laughed. "You’re making sound like a big thing."
Professor Curry smiled and led them to the dorms. The doors opened automatically for her, and she explained that the doors would only open for the room residents and administrators only.
Angel collapsed on the bed after Professor Curry had left and yawned. "Tomorrow we actually start the class," she said.
Rose nodded and climbed into the bed that was next to her. "I’m nervous," she said closing her eyes.
"So am I," Angel said smiling. "But that’s not going to stop me, and it shouldn’t stop you."
"Don’t worry Aunt Maci," the girl said smiling. Her long black hair covered the sword on her back. "I’ll be fine."
