The Plott Hound

The Plott hound is a great friend and a happy dog. It is not his looks that will probably most impress you, but his character surely will! Also if you have allergies, this is a dog you can consider,he doesn't shed.
The Plott hound is a breed of dog that is not only a happy fellow but he is smart also, this is a very sociable dog that likes to be part of the family, they make great family pets!

Because of the fact that they are a hound breed, they are know for having stamina endurance and determination…this makes them the ideal pet for active families who like to do things with their pet all the time. This is not the dog to get if you do not have the time to spend with him because this is a breed that needs constant companionship and love from his owner; this dog not only receives love and affection, he also gives it. This is a brave dog that will not hesitate to stand up to a dog that is twice his size (he is a hound) so care needs to be taken. Although this dog is intelligent, it can be difficult to train him just because of his general temperament and as I said, he is a hound, that kind of behavior is typical to hound dogs.

This is a dog that loves children and will just get along great with them and with other pets as well, but he is a hound dog and he will follow a scent once he picks one up so a good sturdy fence around his yard is really something that cannot be left out of the picture. This is a very active dog and he does need to get a lot of exercise. When it comes to watchdogging, this breed will bark but that is about it, he has too much of a fun loving nature to actually do any guarding, so don’t depend on him too much in that regard.

The Plott hound is a dog that can be medium to large in size reaching a size of up to 26 inches and they can weigh up to 65 pounds. This is an intelligent breed and it shows in his facial expressions; this dog has webbed feet and big drooping ears, they also have a blue or brindle coat that is glossy and thick, there are many times black markings on him as well. Overall, a nice looking dog even if he is not as flashy as some breeds. What this breed lacks in appearance he more then makes up for in character!

Even though this breed has a thick coat, shedding is not a problem at all; so if you have allergies this might be a breed that you would want to consider. All that is needed to keep the Plott hound’s coat in perfect condition is a good brushing once a week and a wipe down with a wet cloth…keep an eye on his ears and also keep them clean because they can get infected. One thing that I have noticed about dogs is that a clean dog is a happy dog.

This is a breed that came about in the United States of America…he is a true blue American breed with no British hound dog blood in him. They were originally bred to hunt big game and they hunted in groups of ten or eleven dogs. This is a breed that got officially recognized right around the 1940’s.

Because this is a breed that has not had his genetics played around with hardly at all, health problems are non existent in this breed (isn’t that a plus?!). The only thing that can be a concern is how fast they eat their food, it can cause some issues if they eat is too fast. This dog has a good life expectancy of ten to fourteen years.

Whenever looking for a puppy always try to find a person that has good breeding habits and somebody that cares about their dogs…the breeder should be interested in the new home of the puppy and the basic living conditions of the dog, they should be able to provide you with proof of health check ups and vaccinations that have been done on the puppy and on his parents. When looking for a puppy, take your time and do not rush the issue, you want to get a good stable dog that will be able to spent the rest of his life with you, so just take your time and then make a wise decision.
