The Planetary Impact of Sustainable Development

Sustainable is to state that something such as resources or an environmental system can be carried on indefinitely without exhausting any of the material or energy resources requisite to continue it functioning. Development is the act, procedure, or outcome of developing. Fused together, it's an idea brought forward by the World Commission on Environment and Development, defined by them as a formula of development or advancement that fulfils the needs of the present, without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to fulfill their needs as well.

We must embrace that we are the custodians of the natural environment and of the entire planet, and as such we are accountable for whatever happens to any of the ecological systems. Can sustainable development work? This question is more complex than it appears.

Environmental groups are working to get political leaders to effectuate more regulations and to pass laws to help protect the innate environment of the planet. By starting with smaller components of the human population such as communities and cities, we can slowly work towards sustainable states and nations and in time, a sustainable planet.

Many businesses are helping by means of recycling, exploiting fewer resources, reducing pollution and a host of different environmentally thoughtful practices. The United States is among the forerunners in this struggle to modify the manner in which humans interact with the natural environment. Increasingly political leaders are coming to the fore and doing their part to effectuate constructive change.

Recently President Bush disclosed plans on reducing global warming and pollution, which is first of all, intended to stop these effects and then to reverse them. Esteemed scientists are stepping up and reporting scientific facts about menacing environmental issues such as greenhouse gases, pollution, El Nino and various atmospheric conditions that are destroying our natural environment, which in turn, if not eliminated, can lead to the entire devastation of our planet.

As more people are enlightened to what is occurring to the natural environment and come to understand that we, the humans of this planet, are responsible for the depletion and destruction of the natural environment, then that makes for more people who will assist in the struggle to maintain and repair what has happened, which could result in sustainable development turning into a complete reality.

One of the principal constructs of sustainable building that must be appreciated and exercised by every human is stewardship, because, like it or not, we are the stewards of our planets' environment. The impact of sustainable development functioning properly is that businesses will continue to be functional and grow, and they will have customers who want to buy their products and they will also have the revenue with which to produce them.
