The New Pixon 12 from Samsung
The world was blown away with the announcement of a mobile phone featuring a 12 megapixel camera. Sony Ericsson was sure that their Satio would give them the leading edge in terms of mobile phone cameras but barely a week after its release Samsung announced their very own 12 megapixel camera in the form of the Pixon 12. But aside from the hefty camera on board the Pixon 12 has a lot to offer.
The Look
At first glance the Pixon 12 looks somewhat reminiscent of Apple’s iPhone albeit slightly more compact. Measuring at 108 x 53 x 13.8 mm and weighing just 120 grams it is much lighter than the new iPhone 3GS. The front of the PIxon 12 is pretty much dominated by the massive 3.1" screen that makes good use of Samsung’s proprietary AMOLED technology. AMOLED provides some of the best quality displays available on a phone and the screen is also touch sensitive, making use of resistive technology. With a resolution of 800 x 480 the Pixon 12 is capable of displaying over 16 million colours ensuring everything is displayed in the most ideal manner.
Technical Details
The Pixon 12 operates on quad-band GSM (850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900) as well as operating on 3G with HSDPA (900 / 2100). Date connectivity options are a real treat on the Pixon 12 and the only feature that is really missing is HSCSD. The Pixon 12 comes with other options including EDGE, GPRS and Bluetooth so there is much to choose from.
One of the areas the Pixon 12 has received criticism is in terms of its internal storage which is limited to a meagre 150MB. This is admittedly small, particularly for such a high end phone that is so media oriented. Despite the criticism Samsung did not have their heads buried in the sand while developing the Pixon 12 and have included the option of upgrading the storage space to 16GB through the use of micro-SD cards.
The Camera
OK, so the main highlight of the Pixon 12 is its camera, and it certainly is a spectacular camera. Aside from the 12 megapixel count, which I am sure you are already aware of, the Pixon 12 has a great many other features attached to its camera. Not only is there an LED flash but there is also a Xenon flash providing choice when it comes to flashes. There is autofocus and the 28mm lens help the Pixon 12 to take pictures with a staggering resolution of 4000 x 3000. But that’s not all, there is also an image stabiliser, wide dynamic range, geo-tagging, as well as face, blink and smile detection. You can also make use of the cameras Beauty shot and Smart Auto mode as well as the highly addictive touch focus that makes blurry photos a thing of the past.
