**Claire's Point Of View**
She was laying there motionless in a hospital bed. The only sound at the time was the heart monitor's beeps and a faint sounds coming from her IV bag. Another car hit the side of Ariel's and rolled her into a tree knocking her in the back of the head. The doc says when she wakes up she'll have some short term memory loss but they're only guessing. Her head exams have not come back yet. Her mom and I could only wait.
After some time the doctor came back in. "Well... Mrs. McEvans, I have some not so great news. Your daughter is in a coma."
"What? How did this happen?"
"When she rolled into the tree she hit the back of her head, it knocked her bad enough that her brain almost shut down. The best thing to do is talk to her. It can wake her up, but if it doesn't she'll subconsciously know you're here. Now, when she does wake up she will have some memory loss. We are not quite sure how much. It could be anything from forgetting how to walk to not knowing how to speak."
"So, we don't know how to wake her up?" I asked quietly. "Is there some medicine you can give her that will wake her up?"
"No, I'm afraid there is nothing. We only have medicines to induce a coma not take it away."
"Oh," The room fell silent. The doc felt the mood in it, nodded his head, and left quietly. I looked at the clock, 7am, I needed to get ready for school. I decided I would already be late and took my time leaving. I was cooking up an excuse for Ariel's absence. I couldn't tell Blake that she was in the hospital, and if he can't know neither can James. What an upsetting thought... I can't even tell my boyfriend what's happening. Wow. I decided on what I'd say, but I really didn't want to leave. Ugh... "Goodbye, Mrs. McEvans, call me if she wakes up, okay?"
"I will hun. Thanks for staying up here since last night."
"Sure. I will be back up here later!"
I drove down to Hollow Tree, and walked up to the boys. I was more nervous than ever! I'm the worlds worst liar.
"Hey, there! How are you guys?" I asked running up to James so I could hug him.
"Good, uh, where's Ariel?" Blake was confused and worried he did something, I could see it.
"She's, uh, very grounded. Her mom won't let her come to school. I can't even go see her!"
"Why not?" James asked.
"Social stuff that her mom says she doesn't deserve."
"Oh, man! It's all my fault... we were just having a blast... time flew so quickly, I-"
"Blake, stop. It's fine. Her mom overreacts, okay?" I continued. I didn't know how long I could keep this up... Lunch came around, and by then I was so gloomy. time to put on the act, I told myself... I walked in with a smile and acted as normal as possible. Blake was so upset the rest of the day. I wasn't sure if I should tell him or not at this point. I'm sure Ariel wouldn't want him to know, but it will get out around the school soon enough.
A week passed and the secret was holding up pretty well still. I was shocked, actually, that it hadn't gotten out. I visited the hospital every day. I talked to Ariel, but nothing came out of it. She was so irresponsive, it was heartbreaking. My phone rang out of the room's silence, and I had to step out to take the call. "Hello?"
"Hey, Claire, it's James and Blake! We just wanted to see if you wanted to come over." It was James's voice on the other line.
"I can't I'm hanging with Ariel, - ugh - I mean I'm ok thanks."
This second voice, Blake, sounded distressed or shocked... "Wait, I thought you said her mom wouldn't even let you near the house."
"Ugh, yeah, I'm bringing her homework."
"Well, can I talk to her then?"
"No, she can't talk right now... umm she's busy. Oh, and grounded." worst liar ever
It was James again, "Listen, babe, I can tell you're lying. Please just tell us what's going on."
"Umm..."
"Please, babe."
"Fine, Ariel is.... In the hospital... she... she's in a coma. She is unresponsive; I didn't want you guys to know. Especially Blake, I didn't want him to blame himself."
I could hear Blake in the background shouting to give him the phone...
"WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? HOW COULD YOU NOT TELL ME MY GIRLFRIEND IS IN THE HOSPITAL.... IN A COMA!?!?"
I heard James say "Dude, you can't yell at my girl like that..." Blake only told him "Shut up, James."
"I didn't want you to blame yo-"
"Please." He said calming down a little "Just tell me where she is..."
