The Neighborhood Pubs and Eateries of Baltimore, Maryland
If you find yourself in Baltimore, Maryland with nothing to do, follow the waterfront through Canton, Fells Point and Federal Hill.
Canton
There are many nice places to visit in Canton that are not on O'Donnell Square, but if you want to experience Canton without the time to learn about "all" the little secrets, O'Donnell Square is the place to go. The small plot of grass, trees and landscaped shrubbery is a welcome site tucked in a traditional Baltimore neighborhood. In the last ten years, O'Donnell Square has grown and become more and more popular as the surrounding neighborhood continues to evolve and become a sought after residential areas for young professionals. To get a real flavor for Canton and this particular nook of Baltimore, you should spend some time at Claddagh Pub and Looney's Pub. These two establishments are the anchors of O'Donnell Square and both were already in place when the true renaissance of the area began in the mid-to-late 1990s.
Looney's offers traditional pub grub, but the food is consistently very good and portions are huge. What was once a cozy Irish pub has grown into more of a sports-bar hybrid, but with the comfort and familiar feel of your favorite neighborhood watering hole. Sit upstairs and enjoy the large screen televisions while you watch the game and eat your wings.
Claddagh Pub is an Irish pub (yes, the model is as popular in Baltimore as it is everywhere else) that has elevated its dining experience to a level that is rarely seen in a bar. Order the cream of crab soup and the firecracker shrimp if you're looking for some tastes of Baltimore seafood at its best.
Fells Point
Fells Point has long been known as "the" destination in Baltimore for short-term tourists and those looking to enjoy the perks of a functional urban neighborhood. The huge asset that Fells Point offers that the other Baltimore neighborhoods don't is the fact that it sits directly on the Inner Harbor. And while Canton and Federal Hill both have areas that are directly on the Harbor, neither offers the wharf-front pubs and pleasant walking areas along the water that Fells Point brings. Cobblestone streets are always a nice thing to experience, especially when the roads run directly along the waterfront. And while there are plenty of great places to pull up a stool in Fells Point, a couple places you should try for a great meal include Slainte and Brick Oven Pizza, both located directly in the heart of Historic Fells Point, with the waterfront just outside the door.
Slainte is, you guessed it, and Irish pub. But this is one that comes with an actual Irish bartender and a feel that is more genuine that any you'll find in the city. To give you an indication, Slainte opens in the wee hours for patrons to catch big soccer and rugby games being played in Europe and around the world. It's on these days when the vibe in Slainte is the best. Get there early (like before 7AM on special game days) and start your day with a traditional Irish breakfast.
Brick Oven Pizza is a local favorite that has been featured on the Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. The name tells you what they serve and it's always great and worth the wait. Pick up a pizza to take with you after an evening out at the bars and you'll probably be entertained while you wait.
Federal Hill
If you have the opportunity, spend some time in the Federal Hill neighborhood on a Sunday morning and afternoon when the Baltimore Ravens have a home game at M&T Bank Stadium. Located almost in the shadows of M&T Bank Stadium and Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Federal Hill benefits from a huge influx of patrons when the home teams are playing. Federal Hill is probably the most cosmopolitan of the Baltimore neighborhoods surrounding the harbor and the entertainment options reflect that. From Mother's Bar & Grill to Cross St. Market to Mad River, there are options here for everyone.
Take some time to stroll through Cross St. Market on a game day, sample some of the fresh seafood and sushi along the way. And before you make your way over to the stadium, grab a pretzel dog to help keep you warm on the walk.
To get a taste of the game-day experience in Baltimore, no place is better than the Purple Patio at Mother's Bar & Grill. Although the inside of the bar offers a plethora of available seating and large bar areas to ensure prompt service, there's just something special about braving the cold on a winter afternoon on the Purple Patio. With Ravens fans all around, there's always an energy there that you just can't find indoors at other locations. Mother's is actually a great tailgating option for those who don't feel like doing all the hard work in the parking lot of the stadium.
