The MacCalisters Chapter 1
The first chapter...finally...BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS!?!
Chapter 1
Rosa’s POV
I blinked my eyes awake and found myself staring into Kevin’s bright green ones.
"Hey." I said tiredly. Kevin grinned. "Why are you always so awake in the morning?" I asked drowsily. He was a freak.
"Just a morning person, I guess."
"I mean, damn," I said, continuing my rant, "we stayed up all night long!"
"I know." He said, nuzzling my neck, "And it was fun, too."
"Oh, shut up," I said, pushing his face away, grinning. I stumbled out of bed and went to make coffee. I never drank it before he moved in, but now, I couldn’t function without it.
"Thank you." I said, seeing that he’d already made a pot, and poured it into my favorite little chipped tweety bird cup. I added some cream and a little sugar, then went to sit on the couch.
Kevin got up and walked to the zipped cover of the tent, and unzipped it, letting it fall, leaving a bright, open space in the left wall. I sometimes forgot that this was a tent, not a house, because of all of the additions I’d made. It was kind of freaky.
The cool fall air wafted in, and I suppressed a shudder. Kevin saw even that, and got a throw, tossing it over me. I gave him a small smile, and he sat beside me, grabbing my feet and pulling, so they were in his lap.
"So," he said, "since I proposed to you three weeks ago, and you accepted, I thought you might want to meet my parents."
"You seem kinda nervous." I said, teasing.
"Yeah, well you haven’t met my parents."
"Well, you haven’t met mine." I said.
"Yeah, well, even though that’s pretty much impossible, your brother’s parent enough to be both."
"Yeah, he is, isn’t he?"
"Yes. Now, stop trying to get off subject. I really don’t want them to get mad at me for another thing, and I think getting married without letting them meet you first would be the thing to push me over the edge with them."
"Yeah, OK honey. That’s fine. Whatever."
"Good. And I think that the rest of us should go, too. It’ll be fun."
"Yeah, that sounds cool." I smiled.
Kenna’s POV
I tiptoed to Rosa’s tent, careful not to let them hear me. I heard Rosa giggle, and knew they were both up. I motioned behind me for Nick and Tony to follow. We were carrying buckets and buckets of stuff, and I couldn’t wait to hang it all up in the big tent. It was going to be awesome.
You see, today is Rosa’s 17th birthday.
Rosa’s POV
"What are you doing?" I asked Kevin, who had gotten off of the couch to do something in the kitchen. He turned with an apron on, a bowl and huge spoon covered in batter in the other, and grinned.
"I’m making you your birthday pancakes." He said.
"Aww. Really?!" I exclaimed. Not even Malachi did that for me.
"Yep." He said, and turned back to the pan. He put the bowl down and got a spatula, flipping the first pancake over. The sun shown in from the little window I’d installed, and it made the image in front of me feel warm inside.
He got done with them really fast, and put some fruit that I had no clue how he got on top. He got some redi-whip and sprayed it. "Voila." He said, bringing the plate to me and putting it on the coffee table in front of me.
"Yum." I said, and looked at it. It was so pretty. The strawberries were placed around the stack of pancakes, and the whipped cream made it look even prettier.
"Well, dig in," he said, looking at me expectantly.
"It’s too pretty," I complained, and tears rimmed my eyes for a moment. I sniffled and pushed them down, but he saw them.
"What’s wrong?" he asked, sitting by me, concerned, and letting the pancake in the pan burn.
"Nothin’. It’s just no one’s done somethin’ like this for me before." I mumbled.
He hugged me, and dashed up to salvage what was left of the burnt pancake.
He made his pancakes, with blueberries because he’d given me all of the strawberries since they’re my favorite, and we ate together in contented silence.
Kenna’s POV
We were trying to quietly hammer into wood, drill into metal, and tape up steamers. (I know the last one wasn’t hard, but the people hanging them weren’t accustomed to the height, so they were complaining rather loudly.)
I grinned at Nick, who was surveying everyone else’s work with me. I tossed this together last minute when Malachi sheepishly brought to our attention that it was her 17th birthday, and that he hadn’t ever really given her anything special for her birthday. Ever. So we (I) decided to go all out. Malachi was out getting tons of ridiculously expensive presents using my college fund (why did I need that!?) and the money he was saving up for a car. (he already had one.)
I grinned, and couldn’t wait for everything to finally fall into place.
Rosa’s POV
I put down the plate, and said to Kevin, "That was really, really good."
"Thanks." He said, and put his plate on top of mine.
I heard some hammering in the distance, and tried to go up to see what was going on, but Kevin held me down.
"No! You can’t see yet!" he growled, and held me in place. Damn him and his huge muscles.
"Come on. Please?" I pleaded, but he didn’t fall for my pouting face. Huh. That’s a first. "Fine," I said, and just sat there, hoping he’d give me enough room to crane and see what was going on.
"I challenge you to a duel," he said, and pulled out my ancient Nintendo. He put in Super Mario Brothers, and gave me the controller, knowing I couldn’t resist. The awesomeness called to me, and I mentally cursed at him.
**
This chapter is really short, but it’s all I could do before I have to go mow the lawn. :) So, I hope you like it, and please comment. It keeps me writing. Really. That’s why I haven’t written in forever. I keep running out of ideas!
