The Lowly Apostrophe

It will bring a twinkle to your eye.
Could there ever be
A more lowly
Grammar mark to see
Than the apostrophe

If a period says stop
And a comma says pause
What does an apostrophe say
That gives a writer cause

To use it
When the reader scratches her head
And has to think a moment
About what she has just read
And wonders
What does that mark mean
That I just read

An apostrophe hides
A letter that is missing
Or shows possession
Of something
That’s kissing

The end of a word
With an "s"
That says
That is something
I possess

Use it when you are writing
Because it catches the eye
And makes the reader pause
With a twinkle in her eye.
