He leaned against the wall, sticking his hands in his pockets. It was cold, even more so now that he had a new hole in his worn down jeans. The people opposite him stared as they walked, some with badly hidden contempt, some with curiosity and some with blatant disgust. The thing that riled him up the most was that no one ever gave him a chance before they judged him. He never once saw pity, not, that he wanted any. God, no. He'd sooner eat from the bins than accept sympathy in some rich bastard's eyes. He scowled and hunched his shoulders. But he'd like it if, when somebody dared to approach him, they'd smile first. He hadn't seen a smile in a long time.
"Jay" he heard and turned his head. Calvin stood there beside him, holding a wallet in his hand discreetly.
"Oh, that was quick" Jay smirked and pushed off the wall with his foot. Calvin grinned and Jay wished he wouldn't. The sight of those rotted and brown teeth, like withered apples, were not appealing. Together, shoulder to shoulder, they walked rapidly round the corner. They dodged into an alley way and Calving crouched down under a dim light and started trying to count out the money. Jay watched him struggle, and with a sigh bent down to help. Shrugging Calvin handed it over.
"Jeez, today we're in luck. Twenty quid" Jay whistled and ran a brown stained hand through his hair. Calvin laughed and reached into his coat pocket, another two wallets landed beside Jay.
"What's this?" he asked, anger barely concealed.
"Well...I managed to get those two as well" Calvin said triumphantly. Faster than a cobra, Jay had Calvin pinned to the wall by his throat. His eyes narrowed and his hold tightened.
"You know the rules Cal" he glared.
"Yeah bu-"
"NO BUTS!" Jay shouted then lowered his voice. "You put everything you have out and no one gets to keep anything to themselves"
"I thought there might not be enough!" Calvin spluttered.
Jay growled and raising a fist, pounded it into the wall beside Cal's head.
He ignored Calvin's whimper and snatched up the other wallets.
All together they had Fifty pounds. He split it as evenly as he could and then left.
As he made his way to the nearest bakery, he clenched his fists. Calvin was a liability. And he'd had enough of liabilities. Jay could look after himself, he wasn't new to this. As he thought this, he pulled out a purse from his trouser pocket. He kind of felt bad for lying to Calvin, but out on the streets, it was every man for himself. He spotted a Gregg's, and hoped they didn't kick him out before he could even put one foot in the door.
