The Last Victim Chapter 22

People were screaming in the street seeing this car chase. Dear reader, I will save you a detailed description by saying if you watch Hollywood movies, you will know what this chase looks like. Mothers held their children and people were running everywhere to escape the deadly vehicles. David stopped in the busiest street and rushed outside the car. Three police officers ran after him but he dodged them and hid in one of the shops.
''Is there a back door?'' he leveled his gun to the terrified saleswoman's head.
"There." She choked.
''Take me to it." He pushed her with his free hand.
When he reached the door he punched her in the face and she fell down like a rock. He changed his coat and wore dark curly wig and ran like a wind.
''We lost him!'' The first officer said.
''Damn!'' The other replied angrily.

Four police cars were in the yard with a bunch of metropolitan police officers, detectives and paramedics were present in the scene when Rouvas arrived. His face turned white and felt that blood has dried in his veins when the police woman approached him and said softly ''Everyone is ok sir.''
He ran inside and found Maddy and the others surrounded by paramedics and wrapped in blankets.
''What happened? What happened?''
''We've been attacked, we've been attacked by this crazy man!'' Maddy screamed with floods of tears on her face.
''Where is Niko?'' he said looking around in panic.
Niko was standing few meters away with the paramedics trying to save the dogs.
''Please, can't you do something to save her? Please!'' he was begging the paramedics as a one of them was pushing him out of the way gently. He was covered in mud and full of scratches. His T-shirt was torn from the neck.
''Niko are you all right? What happened to you?'' Rouvas said holding him to his chest.
''Daddy, Lilith was shot.''
They watched the paramedics trying to resuscitate her but apparently she was gone. Kyle, one of the paramedics stood up and said ''Sorry, she couldn't make it.''
''What do you mean? Try again! Maybe she's unconscious!'' Niko yelled in disbelief.
''Sorry, Niko we did our best.'' He said while the others were collecting their equipments.
Niko kneeled on the floor beside her and cried bitterly.
''Lilith, I will miss you so much.'' he stroked her white fur covered with blood now. The second shot missed Willow. He came and licked Lilith's lifeless head and made sounds that seemed like a woman wailing.
Brandon and Stephen approached Rouvas silently with heavy steps.
''We've investigated everybody but we still need his statement.'' Brandon said quietly.
Rouvas gave him a look that says ''Shut up and get out of here now idiots''
Stephen said quickly ''We are very sorry for the loss of your dog sir. We will come tomorrow."
"I've ordered that two police officers stay overnight today.'' Brandon muttered.
Rouvas didn't answer. Stephen and Brandon looked at each other in embarrassment and walked away without a word.

A small funeral was held the next morning in the garden for Lilith. She was buried in the back yard. Many people attended though, family and friends. Niko's face was colourless and refused to eat and drink anything. Sadness and exhaustion were apparent on his face. His lower back still hurt so much but his emotional pain conquered his physical pain. There was a cloud of sadness that shrouded the house. It was so dark, so gloomy and choking.
