The Last Fury

I Once Had A Normal Life, I Once Was A Normal Teenager Like You. That Was Until I Noticed Strange Things Happening To Me. Now I Am One Of The Last Remaining Furies.
Ever imagined being so lost, so sore that when you moved it hurt with every minute fraction of your body? Ever starved for so many days because you couldn’t find any source of food or water to survive on?

I once used to be regular teen, with a normal family.
That was until my grandpa came to visit. He always told my little sister, Leaf, and I magical stories about a lost race that was once called Fury.

They were the brave, strong and ran with the wind. They had eyes that glowed a dark, mysterious yet some-what sinister purple, they had cat-like grace and abnormal powers that helped them win over many wars. Growing up Leaf and I pretended to be the last of the Fury, ignoring all the coincidental things that happened while playing Fury.
Floating objects, candles alighting, lightning appearing on a clear and sunny day creating freak storms. None of it mattered, we were lost to our imagination.

That was until I reached my 16th birthday. My eyes slowly clouded over and become a misted purple, and my nails become tinged with purple. I was also becoming more and more aware of how others emotions were around me. Just to top it off I shot up more than 15cm in height on the summer vacation, becoming just as tall as my father (roughly over 6ft). My parents freaked and took me to the doctor, he just said it was just ‘adolescence" and I would probably shrink more in the next coming years. At least Leaf thought it was cool, and hoped it would happen to her.

On the morning grandpa came to town I noticed my hair roots becoming a weird shade, different to my raven black hair. Ignoring it I shoved my hair into a ponytail, picked out a pair of jeans and a tee and went into Leaf’s room.
"Guess what." She said as I walked into her room.
"What is it Leaf?" smiling at her as I helped pick out a blue short sleeve dress for her.
"I grew another centimeter, overnight." Her contagious smile flooding across her face, I couldn’t help but smile even wider back.

Leaf was 7 years old, full of life and much more mature than a normal 7 year old should’ve been. She reached a full 135cm, tall for her age. She had vivid bright blue eyes, with long dark brown hair.
"Wait until later this arvo, you might grow yet another." As she dressed, I picked all of her toys up and put them back into their right positions.

"Done." She said smiling, giving her hair a quick brush we ran down the hall and thumping downstairs we saw grandpa already seated on the couch, mum busy in the kitchen making breakfast.

"Go over and sit with grandpa, I’ll help mum." Giving a gentle push sending her on her way.
"Grandpa!" I heard her exclaim as I started fixing up the pancake batter.
"Oh my Leaf, look how grown up you’ve gotten. Grandpa returned.
For a grandpa, he didn’t look much older than Father; they both had shaggy brown hair, with brown eyes. Both were slender and tall, the only age difference that could be seen between the two was the experience in grandpa’s eyes.

"Almost done, love?" Mum asked me. Nodding I flipped the last pancake onto the plate.
Mother was a very attractive lady, whom men still whistled for when she walked by. She had straight jet-black hair that went down to her waist, with a filled out body, and startling blue eyes.
Picking up the plate and jug of orange juice we filled out to the dinning room table, were plates and cutlery was already set.

Leaf came in pulling grandpa along by his hand.
"Slow down Leaf, I'm not as young as I used to be."
Turning around to see his face, Leaf raised an eyebrow. But saw his face was somewhat distant as he stared at me, making me nervous. He never stared at me like he did now. If I didn’t know him, it looked like he was glaring at me.

"Uh- g-good morning grandpa." I stuttered feeling very out-of-place.
Mum and Dad gave each other that ‘parental’ look.
Grandpa only nodded and sat down. Throughout breakfast he refused to look at me, I felt like I had been scolded for something that I never did- nor heard of.

I couldn’t wait for breakfast to finish; it felt like forever before it was over.
Dad, grandpa and Leaf went back into the lounge room while mum and I cleared up.
"Im sure he’s just startled by your appearance, love." She said in her soft voice.
Picking up plates I just said, "He didn’t even look at me, mum!"
The only thing she felt she could do was to hug me.

Stacking the dishes in the dishwasher we walked to lounge room to join them.
Still he refused to look up at me. Leaf sensing my grief sat on my lap with her arm around me.

"Well then, what’s for lunch?" asked grandpa humorlessly.
"You just had brekkie!" Leaf shouted with a smile, before laughing.
'When will this end' was all I could think about.

They began talking about what they would like to have before realizing they didn’t even have half the stuff in the fridge to make it with.
"Don’t worry hun." Dad said, "Leaf and I will run down to the shop, wont we Leaf?"
"Sure dad." She said jumping off my lap, before turning back to whisper in my ear "It’ll be alright." Giving my hand a tight squeeze she and dad took off in the car.

"I have some washing to hang out quickly before they come back." Said mum.
"I can do it." I said wanting the ground to swallow me up.
"No, love. You should keep grandpa company." Giving me that look meaning ‘find out what’s making him act weird.
"Fine." I grumbled. With that she walked out.

We sat in utter silence for a couple of minutes before I couldn’t take it any more.
"What is your problem, grandpa?" I almost yelled at him.
He quickly got up and came to me kneeling at my side, making me feel even more than ever out of place.

"Please, don’t take any offense to how I acted I was only surprised, a-and trying to figure out how this could’ve happened." He said stumbling along.
"Offended?!." I cried out, "Surprised at what!" becoming even more confused.
"Oh my…" He whispered, "You’re a Fury."

With those three words, my whole life changed.
My name is Ember, and I may be very well the last Fury.

Please leave comments, would be much appreciated.

Er, also I wrote a story ages ago called "The Ancient Locket"
if anyone has read that, and wanted it continued please comment on that also. I've just found the book in which I wrote the story.
I've moved states and it proved more awkward to find all of my possessions.
