The Last Fury. Part II
I Once Had A Normal Life, I Once Was A Normal Teenager Like You. That Was Until I Noticed Strange Things Happening To Me. Now I Am One Of The Last Remaining Furies.
I was imprisoned in a 2 by 3 cell. My captives were ruthless. For centuries my kind has fought them off. Now, no one remembers what the war was for. That was all but the enemy. The enemy that made my blood scream. I wanted to rip them limb from limb.
*
Months past when grandpa left without another word to me.
I didn’t know what to do. That was if I had to do anything at all.
Life and family was as normal as ever. The only difference being mum looked at me in much confusion since grandpa left.
I began to wonder if like in those stories, I would have magical powers, I thought I already had the look for it, and knew it was unnatural to feel others emotions so clearly.
I made plans to go to the park on Saturday morning, early so nobody would see me making a fool of myself trying to jump into trees.
"They were lithe, they could jump stories high without falling and hurting themselves."
It was the first and what I figured the simplest to try.
Walking up to my favourite tree, I began stretching. I looked up the tall oak; it had plenty of branches to hang onto in case I slipped.
Thinking about slipping made the doubts in my head want to be heard.
No! I forced myself to stay calm. If I had some mysterious power then I will learn how to use them. Now I really started to feel like a fool. The first branch was a good 2 meters above me. How was I suppose to jump that high without a hand?
"You have to will yourself." Said a voice behind me.
I whirled around.
"Mum! What are you doing here?" what was she doing here?
"Who told you what you were Ember?" she looked serious, but also troubled.
"G-grandpa." How did she know? Was she one as well?
She came up to me and grabbed my wrist pulling me away from the tree.
"Let me go." I told her, resisting.
"No Ember. You will do as I say! You will not become a Fury." She sounded harsh.
"Why not?" I objected violently standing my ground.
"Because no daughter of mine will become a monster." Her voice shook with rage.
Her voice never showed such emotions before. She was furious. But terrified.
"Monster? Mum, wait-" she started walking off towards home.
"Mum stop it." I grabbed her shoulders and froze.
She was cold. Ice cold.
"I know what you desire Ember." She said, back still facing me, "and I have worked hard to earn our right to live here. I will not let you become a Fury." She turned around.
Her eyes were alight. They were so light of purple they looked white.
She was using her power. I could feel it. I could feel her; her body was like an ice core.
"I want to learn my powers, mum. Why don’t you understand that?"
I felt a pang of jealousy seeing mum using hers. I could have whacked my head knowing how stupid I was. Of course I had to get the ability to be a Fury from either Mum or Dad.
She grabbed my wrist again. Sending stabbing pains through my head.
"The only thing you’re going to learn," her voice sounded so cold. "Is the consequence of being grounded." With that she started pulling me home.
I would argued more, if my mind wasn’t frozen, and my body numb.
So here i was laying in bed thinking about mum. And what could be so bad about being a Fury.
I saw the lights turn out, and her bedroom door close.
Does dad know about what mum is? Does dad know anything about the Fury?
There was a knock at my door, then the squeak as it opened.
"Ember? Are you awake?"
It was Leaf.
I sat up and waved her over.
"What are you doing up?" I asked her as she crawled underneath the blankets.
"I heard you and mum. What were you doing?" she looked so innocent.
"Erh, we just went out for a walk." I said, it wasn’t a complete lie.
She glanced over at my clock, which showed 4:53am. Then looked back at me.
"So you went for a walk at 4 o’clock in the morning?"
I laid back down. I couldn’t tell her.
"Please Ember, you can tell me the truth." She held my hand.
It comforted me a lot. That she wanted to know. I could feel her love radiating. But what will she do when she finds out her sisters a monster? A freak?
I kept quiet.
"Is it because of grandpa?" she asked quietly.
I didn’t know if I should tell her or not.
She was so young.
But I needed somebody. Somebody who didn’t care if I was good or bad. Monster or not, even they still need to be loved right? Leaf was a whole lot smarter than anyone her age should be too. I wanted to tell.
So I did.
I told her everything. From what grandpa said months ago. How my changes finally made sense. To what happened this morning.
She stayed quiet throughout my explanations. She didn’t ask any questions when I finished. Was she scared of me? Part of me asked myself.
"Please Leaf say something" I begged.
"I love you Ember. And now you’re a Fury. Who could have a better sister?" she grinned. She looked sincere.
I smiled back.
"Go to sleep, if you want to talk about it later on we can."
She nodded and closed her eye.
How badly I hoped she would think it was all just a dream.
I released my pent up sigh and looked out my window. The sun was rising.
Why should she be scared of me? The other half of me demanded. You grew up pretending you were the last Fury, now that you are your suddenly scared of it all.
Come on Ember, Leaf is your sister. She knows you better than any other person in the universe could.
I closed my eyes and let out another sigh.
Maybe Leaf can dream a dream that can help.
What happens if she turns into a Fury when she’s 16?
Would I be able to help her?
I don’t even know how to use my powers let alone teach anybody else.
With that last thought I drifted back to sleep.
