The Lake House; Chapter Two
Sorry they're short. They get longer.
We pull up to the house and its HUGE! And right on the lake. As the boys bring in the bags, I take a look around the property. The house itself is a log cabin type, with dark brown logs and a stone chimney. It has 3 floors and a wrap around porch, with a balcony facing the water. He must own like 10 acres, I don't see another house for miles. I walk around back to a patio and bonfire pit and a dock with a boat and two kayaks. I can't wait to try those out.
"Yo Sky, we put you in the room with the balcony." I turn around to Parker already in his shorts ready to go out on the water. "Now go get changed so we can go."
"Jeez, your all in such a rush. Thanks Parker."
I sprint up the stairs, but as I run through the house it has the most comforting feeling about it. I opened my doors and there is a massive king size bed with my duffel bag on it. 'Oh I have got to try this out' I think to myself. So i run and jump onto the bed and fall into what feels like a cloud. I could have fallen asleep right there considering I was up at the crack of dawn.
'Tap' 'Tap' I look out the french doors to the balcony and see Parker throwing rocks.
"Get the suit on so we can go." Crap. I threw on the first one I could find and ran out.
"Last one to the boat's gotta be bitch!" And I race them all out to the lake. I'm first, Scott's second, then Parker, then Sean, then Kevin.
"Ohhh Kevin, looks like your sitting by the cooler, pass me a corona?" The boys all laugh and we go set up the wakeboard. I've never actually wakeboarded before but honestly, how hard can it be?
*****************************
BAM! My face hits the water with a slam. What the hell, why can't I just get up?
"Sky, just ease into it" Parker yells out, "You gotta feel it."
He jumps into the water with me and swims over. The other guys went back to the house to go get stuff for the party tonight. We had been out on the water all day, and I refuse to give up until I at least stand.
Parker comes up behind me and says, "You can't rush it, feel the rope pull you up and then go." He puts his arms around mine to show me how to do it. "Your making it harder than it is. But at least you are not wimping out." I laugh and splash him with water.
"Screw off Parker, go drive the boat."
"Yes maam!" And he swims back over.
"You ready?" he shouts.
"Just go!" He revs the engine and I can see the rope starting to move. 'Just concentrate Sky, feel it pull you.' The rope starts to tug in my hand. It pulls my body, I start to lock my knees and let it pull me to a stand.
"Now settle and pretend your snowboarding!" Parker yells. He starts to go faster, and I'm standing, not falling, I'm actually doing it. I ride the wake and the waves created by the boat. Holy shit, I'm actually doing it.
"Yea Sky!" He pulls a fast turn and I go FLYING and land in the water with a thud. He cracks up and comes out to me, helps me get my gear off and swims back.
"Told you it's not that hard." I say when I get into the boat. He just looks at me a laughs.
"Yea yea, I'm real proud. Can we go now?" We head back towards his house just as the sun is setting. He stops the boat and looks at me.
"What's up Park?" He has this look on his face, kinda unsure what to do, but happy. He picks me up and runs off the boat and into the lake.
"We don't have to go back just yet, no one will be there for a few more hours." I laugh and look over at him. He has a slight smile on his face, his eyes a bright and he's looking at me with almost a serious expression, but Parker's never serious. His freckles are getting darker from the sun and his hair a bit lighter. His eyes hold the reflection of the water, but he's looking me over every bit as much as I am him. I look at his lips, his full pink lips which have now turned into his infamous crooked smile, his dimples make him look like he's a little kid again. He swims over and asks,
"What are you thinking?" What am I thinking? I'm thinking that if this was a dream we would have been up here alone instead of with my brother and his other friends, but Parker would never think of me like that. I used to have a huge crush on him back in high school, but as the years passed I got used to the idea that him and I would never be anything. He's Scott's friend, I'm a lot younger, he just wouldn't be into it.
"I'm thinking that I'm starving and you need to make us some burgers." I reply. There's a flicker of emotion in his eyes after I said that, kind of like hope diminishing. Nah, my mind is just making it up.
"Sounds good to me."
