The Joy of Owning A Home Based Business

Dissatisfaction in the workplace is rampant. Starting your own business is not a pie in the sky. Owning your own business will bring you more joy than you can imagine
At the risk of being corny, I am going to share with you my thoughts and feelings after 5 years of running my own business. After spending the previous 25 years in outside sales, I was convinced I could make it owning my own business. I was aslo scared to death. Working for somebody else has its perks. You can count on a check every week, have your insurance paid for, have a 401k to invest in with matching funds from the company...and the list goes on.

Things started to change drastically when buy-outs and ownership changes became more a part of everyday business in corporate America. Years of dedicated service suddenly did not mean as much. Prior performance, particularly in developing customer relations, also went right down the drain. The new guys always have a better, bigger way.

Consequently I seldom experienced any joy in performing my job over the last 6 or 7 years. I read an article not long ago stating that over 75% of the people working in the United States were either dissatisfied or felt unfilfilled at their job. Listen more closely to conversations going on around you at the supermarket, restaurant or social gatherings. Not many people are satisfied. Solomon, indisputably one of the wisest men in history, said, "A man can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in his work." Enjoying what you do an important thing. Maybe, the most important thing.

In 2003, I started Specialty Home Repair, llc. We are just a two-man company and a two-man crew. That is, the bosses are the laborers are the secretaries..you get the picture. No 401k, no expense account, no company vehicle, etc. etc. You would think that alone would be enough to drive a man to drink. Not knowing when your next nickel is going to show up can be a slight hurdle as well. Just pondering all of this confusion can and very often does prevent folks just like you and me from taking that step of faith.

Here's what you're missing if you don't tackle the challenge of changing your circumstance. Energy. It's not just an adage. If you are not saying "Oh God It's Friday" and "Thank God It's Monday", you do not know what you're missing. I can't wait to get going on Monday. I am expectant to see what life has for me each week. I am excited about the prospect of meeting new people who never heard our name and turning them into loyal customers. I am thankful that I'm able to do it. You will never experience the thrill of seeing something evolve from zero to a living if you never take the chance. That is true joy.
