The Importance of the Proper Training Collar

Dont under estimate the importance of a proper dog training collar. Choosing the right training device is your most important step.
You just brought home a new cute puppy and you decided to buy him things that he will need, so you headed to a pet store. While looking for something to buy, you end up buying food, chew toys and a collar. However, it is of your best interest to choose the right collar for your dog.

A dog training collar is an important device in the training course of your puppy, but more often then not it is inappropriately use. According to an expert, a training collar will be ineffective if you do not know the importance and proper use of it.

Dog training collars should not be put on tight. A two finger allowance is enough not to choke your dog. It takes time for a dog to get accustom to something new, therefore the use of a training collar should start while your dog is still a puppy. There will be problems that you will encounter along the way, but it is manageable.

There are many types of training collars available in pet stores such as pinch or prong collar, choke collar, Gentle Leader or Halti, and No-Pull harness. It is important that you understand the purpose and functions of each type of training collar in order to choose the right collar that would best suit your dog.

Choke and prong collars are almost the same in purpose but made from different materials. While choke collar is made from braided nylon, a prong collar is made from metal prongs. Both give a sudden forces that quickly tightens the collar and a quick release afterwards. This will signal the dog to stop whatever he is doing.

However, your dog may get use to the sudden but short pain it causes. So this will give you no more control and may cause damage to your dog's neck. However, if you know the right technique in using this type of collar, it can be an effective training tool.

On the other hand, the Halti and No-Pull harness controls the dog by pulling the dog's head straight down when it pulls. It does not cause pain, however it causes pressure to the area of the dog's head in which they use it to control other dogs. This type of training collar gives the dog control and a best way to teach the dog correct behavior without hurting them.

This type of head collars is similar to a horse's harness. Though it may not look good, your dog will get use to it and will cause no problem if properly use. It allows you to control your dog's head and its body will just follow smoothly.

No-pull harness will also fit in your dog's front legs. If he pulls, the harness will pull its front legs causing him to slow down. However, this type of harness is not ideal for dogs with back problems.

Whatever type of dog training collar you choose for your dog, it is important that your dog will still be able to do its daily activities such as eating, drinking as well as barking. The right collars you choose for your dog will give you pleasure while you are having a walk with him.
