The Importance of the Conclusion

The importance of the conclusion cannot be overstated. As it is the final part of the essay which the examiner will read it will leave the most lasting impression.

If the conclusion is not dealt with satisfactorily it can detract from the remainder of the essay which may have been well written.

Purpose of the Conclusion.

The conclusion should consolidate the issues raised in the earlier part of the essay by way of a mini summary. It must not introduce new matters that have not been discussed earlier. The conclusion should be focused and concise.

It should be relevant to the specific question asked so that the examiner is left feeling that the question has been fully answered.

If the question asked you to "criticise" or "analyse" a judge’s comments in a particular case, then make sure that you do. Do not merely recite the judge’s comments but you must discuss them in an analytical manner.

The question invites you to comment upon the judge’s comments. Usually, when asked to analyse comments this calls for a commentary upon the effect of the judge’s comments upon existing law as determined by prior cases; whether the judge’s comments have led to new legislation or guidance from the attorney general; whether the judge may have misinterpreted the law; the context and effect of the comments in general.

If a question asks for you to agree or disagree with a particular academic’s comments, in deciding whether or not you agree, you must discuss a wide range of issues which demonstrate how you reached your conclusion.

You may decide that your conclusion is based on the influence of and interaction amongst several other factors. The examiner is looking for a multi dimensional approach to the question so that you do not concentrate on one aspect alone. So you may both agree and disagree with the academic’s comments after reflecting on other factors and not taking his view in isolation.

An examiner will reward an innovative approach which is still relevant to the facts of the topic discussed.

The conclusion should be viewed as a method of consolidating all the previous observations in summary form, and then ending with addressing the question posed.
The conclusion should be viewed as a tool whereby the examiner can review the main issues and facts discussed to date. This is why it is important not to introduce fresh matters in the conclusion which have not been identified before as they will not be in context.
