The Hungers - Part 6
Part Six.
For Jamie, the mere idea of love was but a distant dream, one that he would never live. The Hungers were not quite what the humans classified as 'robots' yet their creator seemed to have that idea in mind. Half of Jamie's brain and heart was made of machinery but he was still mostly flesh. The author must have been created differently, specially, that was why Dr. Pi found favor in her. An ache in Jamie's left temple submerged as he attempted to decipher the hidden secrets that he was denied of. Damned human qualities, he cursed mentally. Sometimes he debated about getting 'fixed' like the other Hungers. Yet they were living restrained lives, never to think for themselves. The head officials thought it more sophisticated if all the Hungers' flesh were replaced with high molecule technology that would enable them to live as long as two hundred and two years old.
Seemed to long for Jamie's comfort, however. A horn halted his wandering thoughts, his ride was here. He grabbed a small rectangular six inch case that held all of his essentials and headed out the door. Before he made it outside, however, his inability to leave the diary nipped at him. Maybe, if he found something useful, he could use it against the government. If only he had been that lucky.
"Jamie Three!" Lilly exclaimed, climbing out of the passenger side while the driver gave him a polite nod despite waiting an extra six minutes for him.
"Hello, Lilly, how are you?" he asked, not bothering to hesitate from getting into the car. Lilly was one of the head senates, one that had been keeping a keen eye on him after the rumor.
Lilly paused, scrutinizing him with one of her blue, technical, eye, then got back into the car and signaled for the driver to drive. "Have you been replacing your human meals with extra charging? You like a little withdrawn and slow."
In truth, the less human food he ate the more he did things without emotion. Would the government really go so far as to taking their emotions away from them? Did they truly despise humans that much?
"Good to see you too, Lilly," his said begrudgingly. If he was not careful she could report him to the Police, they could dispose of a body and not be caught easily.
Yet she shrugged as if his answer was meant as a response to her question. "The weather has not cleared up, unfortunately, so we will be having the debate in the old human City Hall."
"Aw," he responded, not taking a least bit interest to their conversation. Lilly had already succeeded on getting on his last nerve, and she had a way of not realizing it.
Lilly felt the need to reach out to him, turning in her seat she squeezed his hand. "I know how difficult it has been for you, Jamie Three. If you ever need a companion, I will be here for you."
Jamie wondered idly if she meant for sex or for talking to so that she could go off and tell on him to the Police. Sex was one of the many things the Hungers had yet to resolve, it was one of the most important things of live despite the fact it was one of the strongest emotions. They mated freely with whom ever was available, it was looked down upon to have a specific partner. Either way, however, he was certainly not interested even though she was very attractive.
"Thanks," he said as his eyes diverted from hers and his hand slid away from her grasp.
The cold shoulder seemed to displease her for she pursed her lips and turned sat stiffly in her seat. Luckily for him, she did not say another word until they arrived at the City Hall.
